Pullman WA Sellers and Home Owners Tips For Fall & Winter

By
Real Estate Agent with Beasley Realty

Pullman WA Homeowner TipsFire and Ice.  That is the topic of todays blog to get your home ready for the Fall and Winter Months.

Let's start with Fire, shall we?  Because our winters in Pullman Washington are cold, lots of homes have fireplaces.  I know mine does, and I love snuggling up in front of the fire.  In fact, once I do, I have the dickens of the time breaking aways from it's mesmerizing warmth.  But you need to remember that dangerous creosote builds up in a fireplace with use.  So before those cold days set in, you should get that chimney cleaned.  I don't know if you have ever seen a chimney fire, but I have, and they are Scary.  This is one of those things you want to do annually.

Ice.  Not something you want hanging from your gutters come winter.  In fact, it can lead to ice dams on your roof which is something you don't want to experience either.  I have also seen ice build up in gutters whereby they have pulled loose which is also not something that will make your day either.  So make sure those gutters get cleaned out of all debris and leaves.  You want wanter to move freely.  And don't forget to double check your drain spouts either.  You want all that water moving away from your house come winter.

As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Good Advice Lori!  I have to admit I have been lax in the past in keeping up with the maintenance only to pay for it one way or another later on

I believe by burning hardwood logs vs. soft woods like spruce, pine, fir...your chimney stays cleaner too. And the fire lasts a lot longer.

Lori,

Great reminder about ice. A subjext we don't hear about, but we should, for the reasons you point out.

Lori, I always thought the "rule of thumb" for chimney sweeps was one every cord of wood.  When I lived in Chicago, I probably could've been classifed as a latent arsonist - I loved my fireplace so much.  But after the first chimney sweep, I learned the valuable lesson of having the chimney cleaned when the sweep brought down some residue and told me to take a match to it - it lit like kindling.  Great reminder.

The chilly, damp days of this week finds me almost ready to light a fire in the fireplace--gas logs don't smell or sound like the real deal, but they are warming and mesmerizing.

Debbie ~ Believe me you aren't alone.  I had problems with my gutters a couple of winters ago. We had cleaned them but they weren't properly installed and didn't drain properly causing ice build up.

Trey ~ Very interesting and thanks for sharing!  Of course, in our neck of the woods softer woods such as pine and fir are what we have!

Scott ~ Often it is the little things we overlook and then regret later...

Juli ~ That was a smart chimney sweep....I bet it was a lesson you didn't easily forget.  Yes...for those who burn extensively it is a good idea to have it done after one cord.   Most of us use them more for ambiance than heating...so most folks here go through about a cord a year...

Marilyn ~ I am looking forward to reading your post!

Charles ~ Thanks so much and thanks for stopping by...it is always good to see you!
