Shopping Local...isn't Wal Mart

By
Managing Real Estate Broker with Flexit Realty "Flexible Home Selling Solutions"

Shop local isn't shopping at the Wal Mart or Lowe's although they may be close or easy access.

I can't say bad things about large "Box Store Retailers", they have Shopping Can Be Funthe purchasing power to generate some fantastic prices.  Some of them even have return policies that allow you to exchange your defective product!  Many local people depend on the job they have a those retailers.

Shopping local is the grocery store, hardware store, gas station.  Have you gotten to know any of the employees at these stores?  My wife drives 15 miles across town to get her hair cut.  She has used the same person for years.  (I am not saying my wife is OLD...thought I would make sure everyone knows! including my wife, she sometimes reads my posts!)

This loyalty is from good service.  Listening and providing what is needed.  I have a client that asked where I shop for groceries...I actually do very little shopping but my wife uses one of the locally owed chains.  She likes the service and the vegetables are always fresh along with the meats.  He said, he uses the same store.  His comment was they treat him like a person not a customer.

I asked a bit more about his statement.  What is the difference, a person or a customer, they seemed the same?  He said, like you...you listen, share and engage that is treating people like people.  Customer are talked at...given instructions or informaiton and next...is the feeling you leave with once helped.  You are just another face when you are a customer.

This brought back what it is about real estate that I like.  The personal contacts and interactions.  Sometimes that's the same reason I hate real estate too! We can joke about this but the facts are plain and simple.

You can grow your real estate business by listening.  Listen to what people want from an agent.  What is the service they expect from you?

Here is a key component to success in any industry but especially real estate.  Provide a service that creates a lasting relationship.  You will get more referrals and your business will last when others are long forgotten.  Think of the family hardware store.  They are always friendly and helpful.  They don't always have everything in stock but they can get it delivered on the next truck!  The local pharmacy, grocery store or gas station...if you get to know them they will help you increase your business.

Here is a link I thought you might find interesting.  The link share some thoughts on training.  Listening, service and customers.

I try and go local because it helps people and not corporations. In my opinon this also helps America more as the big corporations evade most taxes. Money is power and how you use it matters. Nice Post Gary

Gary, something to add to that is that since you are giving these local businesses your loyalty and money, shouldn't they be doing the same to you? Loyalty goes both ways. Just something to think about.

I moved to a small town a nd I didn't realize how much buying local can impact the community.

It helps with the revenue as well as builds repeat customers.  This is something all real estate agents can learn from.

Funny, but the Unions tell a very similar story.  But what do you expect people to do in an economy such as this?

Thank you for making this point.  Of course, if Wal-Mart has already put everyone out of business -- it would be shopping local then.  Never forget visiting a friend in Mississippi and she asked me if I wanted to go to the Wal-Mart or Super Wal-Mart and she was completely serious!

Gary, the best way to start a relationship with a customer is to actually listen to them and offer suggestions and service based on their wants and their capabilities. A local grocer or merchant has to do this just to show their value over over the big box merchants.

Gary, Wal-Mart and the other big boxes are local. They hire local people and provide an economic impact in the community through their payroll expenditures and the taxes they generate directly or indirectly.  They also generally are one of the first to contribute to local community causes.  Yes, they have perceived drawbacks but they are local - it is an oxymoron to say they are not local.

Big boxes have a certain price value relationship which they offer consumers. Typically, it is more of a commodity product w/ less specialized service.  The more specialized price/value offering is provided by what is being referred to as local businesses.  Both have a place and both need to differentiate their offerings to be competitive.  If I can buy the same commodity product at a higher price why would I make an irrational economic decision?  I might make an emotional decision to do so but recognize it as an emotional not an economic decision.  If I need specialized service and high value product knowledge, why would I go to the commodity supplier - they do not have the expertise to meet my needs.   Driving 25 miles to a specific provider may not be local when many similar providers are bypassed.  Doing so reflects an economic price/value decision to go to a perceived supplier of high value.

Trying to put all providers in the same category does not work. Faulting big boxes because they do not provide specialized services ignores their business model - they are not trying to do so.  Faulting the local hardware store because their prices are higher than the big box does not recognize the intimacy of the purchasing transaction.  They are just two different business models.

Real estate is similar - many are trying to maintain the same high risk, high reward business model with a full service provider. Consumers are looking for lower costs because they do not perceive and recognize the price/value relationship of the traditional commission driven business model. Again, different business models exist depending on consumer choices.  Trying to force everyone into the same model won't work.  People want choices.

My mom has always believed you get better service from the small, family type stores.  She run her mortgage business this way and has taught me to do the same.  Aside from the benefits to my business, I've also developed several friendships as a result.

Shopping local may often cost more(can't purchase inventory at same bulk rate as Walmart)but has a much much greater shot at growing your business !

Unfortunately, it's hard to find hometown businesses that are still in business.  If it's not the big box guys drving them out it's the economy.

Local shops have been so hard hit in the past years with malls and big boxes.  But local owners can offer great service.  There's a local dress maker in town -- absolutely great.  Pet store specializing in birds!!  Yup, the local shop owners can be very niche market . . . something to think about!

Hi Mel, I have to share with you that I know Wal-Mart better than 99% of the population once owning a company that was a primary supplier to Wal-Mart and making may trips over the years to Bentonville, Arkansas.  The fact that I prefaced my comments was not to slam the big box stores...but to share the opportunity of local relationships and service.  You did well with the outline and I appreciated your comments.  Thanks for the analogy and Contibution. :-_

Hi Morris, small communities have had a hard time with community planning and making ends meet (tax dollars) that many downtown shopping districts are now ghost towns.  Thanks for the comments Morris.

Listening better is a good goal. I like the concept of shopping local and then blogging about the Mom and Pop shops, too, to give them great exposure. They treat us well, we should treat them well in kind.
