Pay it Forward - Christmas Walk
Now this is a classy Pay it Forward with a lot of giving in it! It would be nice if we all grabbed this kind of an opportunity to give back to our community!
Every year over the first weekend of December our local Chamber of Commerce puts on a Holiday kick off called "Christmas Walk" for our local merchants with a tree lighting Friday eve and a Santa parade on Saturday morning.
A number of years ago I was involved in a local Veteran Firemans's organization that has an old horse drawn fire engine. Despite quite a bit of resistance at first from the group I convinced them to get involved in the "Christmas Walk" activites which they had not done before.
After alot of sweat and perserverance we opened our Hall, which is right in town on the parade route, to the public and served hot apple cider, coffee, hot choclate and cookies to the frosty folks taking in the holiday festivities. As my special contribution I sponsored bags and bags of candy canes and a team of horses to pull the old fire engine in the parade. You should have seen the glow on the kids faces along the parade route when the big horses came trotting down the snowy street pulling the brightly polished old fire engine and the kids grins beaming with the candy canes we handed out to them.
The tradition continues even though the horses have long since been put out to pasture now the fire engine is pulled in the parade with a pickup truck.
