10 States Losing the Most Residents

Using data from Moody’s Economy.com, Forbes identified theillinois, top-10 states where more residents are leaving than arriving. The factors that encourage outbound migration from these states are mostly economic — high employment and high cost of living — although both Louisiana and Mississippi have been affected by natural disasters.

The 10 states that have said goodbye to the most residents are:

1. New York
2. Illinois
3. Ohio
4. Nebraska
5. Kansas
6. Iowa
7. Louisiana
8. North Dakota
9. South Dakota
10. Mississippi

So for Illinois,
I'm saying it's the weather and the high taxes.

See....again, why no points on this? I really don't understand how that happens. :( California would be on that list except we don't close our border...so it's the productive ones leaving and the welfare recipients coming. Great.

RED X AGAiN?!   I am afraid that way to many are moving to Minnesota.  I need to quit bragging about how good it is here.  If they stay in the big city, well then, OK

More opinions than you want to hear about.

I'm surprised to see North Dakota on the list.  It doesn't play that way with the US Census numbers.  North Dakota is one of the small handful of states with a positive revenue projection and very low unemployment.

Karen:  Yes I understand.

Bill:  Yes I can't get a star either.  No points on this one because it's from another source.

Mike:  Are you sure? My nephew is upthere in SD and there isn't much to do up there. I'm not sure about employment options.  I know in IL people are just sick of the politics & taxes.  Gosh, the last how many governors have been thrown in jail.

Hi Lyn:

I just had to check in to see which states made it on the top 10 list of people saying goodbye!

Lyn - You are right about the weather, that's one of the reasons my family left IL and never looked back.

North Dakota is lowest in unemployment rates at 3.8%.  Here are November stats:

North Dakota is also the only state to not face a budget shortfall in either 2009 or 2010.  Shale oil in the northwest portion of the state probably has a lot to do with their good fortune.

Lyn, I grew up just outside of Chicago and remember all too well those brutal winters!!  It sure is a lot easier on us living down here in Raleigh!

More opinions than you want to hear about.

I'm not sure what Forbes is using as a source.  According to census numbers reported by the NY Times, the only state with a population decline since 2000 is Michigan, and it's not even on their list.  Forbes must be measuring something other than population shifts.

There are going to have to be a heckovalot more people leaving Illinois before I consider moving back there.  Also, it may be easier to count the number of Illinois governors who went to jail than to count the number that somehow avoided it.

Lyn, though we usually get our share of buyers from all northern states, they are usually buying 2nd homes - in the last 2 months we've had 3 buyers relocating, full time to Naples coming from Rhode Island - all three mentioned the taxes.  I guess they were all willing to deal with the weather, but not both.  I'd be interested to know the numbers leaving and where they are going... will research.  Thanks for sharing.

Mike:  I don't know if it's correct it was compiled from Moody's Economy.com.  You have to pay for all articles/posts is seems for information or to validate the claim.

Ellie:  That is also why so many sites have the tax base areas for retirement searches.  I personally have a few on my site that are great.  People are picking an area with the lowest taxes.

David:  It's a great city & right now it's in a flux because of the future change in command. Lots of foreclosures and lots of lost tax revenue that is needed.  But that is true for all larger cities right now.

Same here, high taxes and cold weather. But the overcrowding and traffic also factor in.

I am actually surprised Nevada (formerly one of the fastest growing) isn't on "the list"

Renee:  Me too, but I think the weather is still nice even with the econonic ups & downs you've had.

JP:  Yep, nothing like a 1/2 hour drive to go 2 miles huh? When I go to L.A. I always hear they are the worst - they aren't AT ALL.  Throw in some black ice, pot holes, and you got yourself some expressway fun around here!
