Is Your Blog Being Read?
I was reading through the regular blog roll this morning, wanting to read some fresh content in addition to my subscriptions to favorite blogs.
I was originally going to call this post, "The Value of a Paragraph" because I quit reading two different entries simply because the unbroken block of black type was too difficult to read.
I believe every person who blogs on Active Rain wants their material to be read. Statistics say we have only 15 seconds to win over our readers and browsers.
To that end, I feel that there's just a few really quick, basic pointers that bloggers should keep in mind:
1. Use paragraphs. Please don't have one long, run on block of text. I'm a big-time fan of reading, but I find it incredibly hard to follow two inches of small, black print. Pattern yourself after a newspaper story - or better yet, read some of the blogs on here by Ambassadors - copy their post style! (Nestor and Katerina Gasset quickly come to mind as a great example!)
2. Add pictures, if relevant to your post. Statistics prove that we are a visual audience - capture your reader's interest with an appropriate photo or graphic - and don't forget copy-write law!
3. Spell check. You've seen the blogs. You know the drill. There's a bright blue ABC check on your menu bar. Do yourself a favor and just before you click "POST", click the spell check first. Some time ago, a reader sent me a message to tell me I'd mis-spelled petroglyphs on one of my Localism posts. I wonder if I lost a possible client there, or just a reader. Don't take that chance.
4. Know your voice -- Know the law of attraction -- Channel your blog posts to that end for effective use of time. I wrote about that a while back in a featured blog entitled, "I Propose...A Purpose!"
The value of a paragraph, or a photo, or punctuation, can result in new readers, new prospects, new clients, and more. Is Your Blog Being Read? Don't let something simple weaken your 15 second audition.
