Perception Is Reality: Dress For Success

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Web Email Flyers

How many agents do you know in the business that still think that every day is a Friday and wear t-shirts and jeans all of the time?  I can't believe how many Realtors walk into a closing or business meeting dressed like they just came from the gym or beach.  In South Florida, I know the weather is scorching hot, but we can all at least wear polo shirts and khakis pants.

On a listing appointment or when we meet potential buyers for the first time, we have about 30 seconds or less to make a lasting first impression!!  So, with less than a minute to grab the attention of your clients and keep them engaged in your conversations, it is ESSENTIAL to look the part of a professional that takes pride in his/her work and is truly dressed for success.  How you appear to someone is the most important trait in building a great impression and hopefully a lasting business relationship.

Your manner of dress speaks for you before you do. It's important not to blow any opportunity.

Where in the world does an (*&*^%##%^&  e-mail spam company get the right to tell me how to dress to sell real estate?

I dress like my buyers do.  I sell homes to them.  I don't pallute the Internet with garbage.

Dressing for success is essential - but the definition of what dress is is appropriate changes with whom you're doing business.

Mike - I agree with you 100%. I wear a shirt and tie everyday to work in the summer and full suit in the winter. I know it separates me from many especially during a listing presentation.

Wow Lenn...what a harsh tone.  Uh, how do I follow that?  Well I can see it from both sides of the coin.  Being a "young" Realtor®, I tend to dress my age and sometimes feel that me over-dressing my client can intimidate them.  So I try to match my client.  I never fall below business casual unless I'm out with my family, totally out of work mode and get called to show a property or fetch a signature, then I apologize and go on with business.  I also know that first impressions are very important so I have my collection of business attire ready for those moments as well.

Your blog is so on the money. I have often beat a ciompetitor to a listing by dressing  correctly. This is especially true with older buyers or sellers who come from a business dress era.

I agree, jeans are never acceptable in business, but casual is the buzz word in Florida.

I totally agree with you. I always wear a suit when I meet with a new client.  As a home stager how can I tell my clients to use home staging to give their home a great first impression if I can't give them mine!

I have always been one of those agents who wanted to dress the way I wanted to dress and I have always done well for myself.  However, I have learned something from a good friend of mine, who happened to be be the number one real estate agent in the US last year; to dress for success.  He always dresses well (i.e. dress shirt and tie and often times a jacket) even though he works in very hot Phoenix AZ.  About a month ago I went out and bought a whole new wardrobe.  No more jeans and casual shirts for me.  If I only have thirty seconds to make a great first impression then it's worth being a little uncomforatable.

Lenn:  Sorry, I guess that email flyers aren't for you and your team.  You can simply unsubscribe and never receive them again.  But, for agents with large listing inventories having a difficult time getting showings on their homes, sending email flyers to thousands of local Realtors will increase your chances of selling your listings.  For example, the more For Sale By Owners that you call, the better chances of you getting multiple listing appointments.  The same applies for email flyers.  The more that you send, the better chance you have of increasing your showings.  You will also impress your sellers by offering this marketing medium to send their property listing to many agents in the area.  We are totally CAN-SPAM compliant.  Please check us out at www.WebEmailFlyers.com   Good luck Lenn and thank you for your feedback.

Let's elevate our credibility and dress for success!!

Absolutely agree with you on this one.  Perception is reality and if your customer or potential customer does not perceive you as a professional then they are not going to give you the business.  Here in Naples the weather is usually warm to hot it is easy to slip into something casual, especially if you don't expect to be seeing any customers.  However, I never know where my next customer is going to come from so I always try to dress professinally (with a Florida state-of-mind) just in case.  It only takes a few more minutes to iron a shirt and slip into heels.  If I look like I'm successful at my business I figure people are going to want to do business with me.
