It is another snowy day in Denver, Colorado with a balmy 21 degree temperature outside right now. The snow flakes are flying like crazy across the frigid sky. Of course, that doesn't even begin to discourage my golden retriever Rocky from going outside to frolick in the snow. He is only 10 months old and has become quite fascinated with the white fluffy stuff this year.
I think the cold air and the fact that the snow is different than the norm just invigorates him and gears him up for play mode. He runs figure eights in the backyard and slows down long enough to search for frozen hidden treasures. He is so proud when he finds an old bone in the yard which has now turned into a Ben and Jerry's puppy treat. I equate his excitement to that of a toddler going to MCDonald's fun land for the first couple of times. He sees it as a new adventure and something really fun he can play in. I know he gets bored on his bed in my office watching me type and needs to go out and blow off some steam whenever he gets the chance. Since it is hard to take him for a walk right now, I am glad the snow can at least amuse him for a bit. I know that dogs can get frostbite on their feet, so Rocky is only allowed out in 5 minute intervals. I think he would stay out there all day given the opportunity.
Maybe we should be more like our pets and learn to appreciate the little things around us when they present themselves.
