Why Do Dogs Like Snow?

Rocky in the snowIt is another snowy day in Denver, Colorado with a balmy 21 degree temperature outside right now.  The snow flakes are flying like crazy across the frigid sky. Of course, that doesn't even begin to discourage my golden retriever Rocky from going outside to frolick in the snow.  He is only 10 months old and has become quite fascinated with the white fluffy stuff this year.

I think the cold air and the fact that the snow is different than the norm just invigorates him and gears him up for play mode.  He runs figure eights in the backyard and slows down long enough to search for frozen hidden treasures.  He is so proud when he finds an old bone in the yard which has now turned into a Ben and Jerry's puppy treat.  I equate his excitement to that of a toddler going to MCDonald's fun land for the first couple of times.  He sees it as a new adventure and something really fun he can play in.  I know he gets bored on his bed in my office watching me type and needs to go out and blow off some steam whenever he gets the chance.  Since it is hard to take him for a walk right now, I am glad the snow can at  least amuse him for a bit.  I know that dogs can get frostbite on their feet, so Rocky is only allowed out in 5 minute intervals.  I think he would stay out there all day given the opportunity.

Maybe we should be more like our pets and learn to appreciate the little things around us when they present themselves.

Rocky

Belinda, we have a short hair Vizsla and she loves the snow, when she does here crazy running in 8's we call it "crazy dog". She too loves the snow and never seems to get cold, she also loves to go on long hikes in it and eats snow when she get's thirsty...self taught on that one. They are so much fun!

Belinda ~ My dog, Kobi, loved our walk this morning.  He stayed out while I shoveled.  I know when I get home from the office, my driveway will require another shoveling and Kobi will want to be out with me.  He loves the snow, but hates the rain.

When you outgrew your snowsuit you probably changed your attitude about snow. Give Rocky another year.

Hi Belinda, Rocky is so handsome and you can tell that he loves it outside in the snow.  Love the second picture with the snow on his nose.  Stay warm!

Great looking dog. I'm sure you're right on the money about him being curious about what it is that's falling and on the ground. I say great, it gives you a break from having to take him for a walk.

Belinda, on the opposite spectrum --- my two kitties are cuddled under the covers on the bed, all nice and warm!    Isn't it funny how they differ!    Most dogs do enjoy this type of weather!

My dogs have had the chance to enjoy the snow only once on December 24, 2004. The day it snowed in Corpus Christi Texas. But they do all love the beach very much!

I don’t know about dogs and snow because we don’t have too much snow here in San Diego. However, I have always wondered why dogs like to ride in cars with their heads out the window. They always look so happy with their tongues drooping and ears flapping in the wind.

Belinda, My Brandy, a female sheltie, is not like Rocky, she truns out on the deck and puts on the brakes when she see that white stuff.  She is to much of a lady to play in the snow.  Maybe Rocky and Brandy need a play date in the snow together.

Belinda - My two poodle pups enjoyed the 2 inches of snow we received this morning!  It's like the fluffy snow gives them an extra boost!!!  Beautiful dog you have!

Denise, your poodles look very cute. I've heard poodles are so smart!!!

Laura, I would love to find out if Rocky loves the beach ... I know I do.

Jim, It is funny how they hang their heads out of the car window.  Rocky does that.  He just loves it.

Joan, your kitties are very smart for staying warm.

Belinda, I remember from growing up in NJ my dog LOVED the snow! When I moved him to Florida, it took some adjusting to the beach from the white stuff, and I think he preferred the snow over the beach some days.

Hi Belinda, Rocky is absolutely beautiful!  I love to watch dogs do things like run figure eights and have a blast like it sounds like Rocky is doing in the snow!  So fun to watch.   Also, love your new photo!

Thanks Joyce.  Rocky has been digging in the snow this morning and is absolutely covered with mud now that the temperatures are reaching near 50.
