Facebook vs. Active Rain. Which comments are more valuable to you?

We all love comments.  It means that people are paying attention to us, and that is exactly what we want!  I have wondered this question for quite a while...

Which comments are more valuable to you and your business?  Facebook or Active Rain?

The only time I get a lot of comments on Active Rain is when I get featured, otherwise I normally get 7-10.  I have noticed a few bloggers that consistently get 25 + comments each time they blog.  That's incredible!  Well, so are their blogs!  They are filled with great information and humor, two of my favorite things.

Facebook is a different story for me.  I normally get 50 + "likes" or comments on my status updates.  A few times a week I'll get around the 100 mark.  Most of my status updates are funny and light hearted.  I normally update 2-3 times a day and try to tie real life stories and real estate into a lot of my updates, but most laced with humor.  (Or my ATTEMPT at humor)

Why are Active Rain comments important to me?

1.  Your knowledge.  I am entering my 3rd year as an agent and am always open to learning from others.  Your knowledge and opinion is valuable to me.

2.  Google likes comments.  I read somewhere that blogs with a lot of comments rank higher than similar blogs with less comments.  Keep the comments coming!

3.  I'm building my referral network.  Fort Wayne, IN doesn't come to mind when you think of a place where people are standing in line to move to, but I would like to think that most  ALL Active Rainers would send their Fort Wayne area referrals to my team.

4.  SEO.  Nuff said.

Why are Facebook comments important to me?

1.  It shows that people are paying attention to what I'm doing and they keep coming back for more.  I have a pretty big audience on my personal Facebook page and I like to keep them entertained and I like to keep my name and profession fresh in their minds.

2.  Most of the people commenting are in my back yard.  Most of my Facebook friends actually live in my area.  They like my style, my humor, and then they hear what I do for a living and it's almost automatic after that.  A lot of my "friends" on Facebook I have never met, yet they still refer people to me.  Love it!

3.  Sometimes it's personal.  People love to give their opinion.  I ask a lot of questions on my status updates and I get a lot of answers.  Simple questions like "Who is the best actress" or "What is your favorite memory as a child" get the most comments.  Not only that...  it helps you get to know some of the Facebook friends you don't know in real life.

I know that a lot of agents still don't use Facebook and never will.  That's cool.  I get it.  I don't need to hear how much of a waste of time it is.  It's not for everybody.  I also understant that comments are just that, comments.  About 50% of our business in 2010 came from Facebook connections.  So for those of you that use both Facebook and Active Rain for business...

Caring expertise...knowledge for you!

Hmmm...good question, but I think, as your post shows, different responses are important....there isn't just "one thing", anymore, and I find good value in both.

Most of the comments on AR if not all, come from other agents which is great for learning, the sharing of ideas and referrals.  But a conversation on FB, where you can occasionally remind people what you do for a living is priceless! When 50 people comment on a thread about one of your recent sales and listings, it's like sending out 50 postcards for free!  That's 50 people who get a friendly reminder that you are in real estate. And you can do that far more often than a once a month mailing. Both have value, but if you want leads for your area, FB wins.

Jared-As someone who is fairly new to both the facebook and the AR communities, I'm finding that comments on both are more and more important as I see their role in building a network.  I love how you explain the differences in how they are important.  It makes perfect sense as to why we should make those all too important interactions a priority.
