~ Moving Check List ~
Are you planning on moving to Aurora, Colorado? If so, have you written down the many tasks that are needed to be done before you take that step? If not, I have taken that upon myself, since I consider myself as an expert when moving to Aurora, Colorado.
1 - make sure you pick up a change of address form from your local post office and fill it out. They have a nice little change of address package that includes discounts on moving companies, services and stores. You should fill this out and return it to the post office about 1 week before you actually make your move. The main Aurora post office is located at 16890 E. Alameda Pkwy (the southwest corner of Alameda and Buckley, zip code 80017). The phone number is 800-275-8777.
2 - Contact all of your accounts and let them know you are moving. This would included credit cards, your bank, the IRS, your health, car and home owners insurance carrier, etc. If you know your forwarding address, you can just fill out the change of address slip that comes with your bill or go to their website and do this. Sometimes waiting for your mail to be forwarded to you can cause delays and delay your making a payment.
3 - Utility services for your old address need to be canceled and turned on for your new address. If you are purchasing a home, your water will be transferred into your name by the title company at closing. This is done because water is the only utility, if unpaid, that can cause a lien against the property. Aurora Water Department can be reached at 303-739-7388. ECCV Water (for some residences in unincorporated Arapahoe County with an Aurora mailing address) can be reached at 303-693-3800. For gas and electric, Xcel Energy is the provider. Their phone number is 1-800-895-4999. And for those moving to unincorporated Arapahoe County with an Aurora mailing address, Xcel still services the gas, but IREA service the electric. Their number is 303-688-3100.
4- If you are moving to Aurora, Colorado from out of state, you will need to register your car within 30 days. The motor vehicles title and registration location for Arapahoe County is at 490 S. Chambers Rd. (in the far back corner and on the southeast corner of Alameda and Chambers). If you move into the Adams County part of Aurora (north side of Colfax St.) you will need to go to 3449 N. Chambers Rd. Suite A. Keep in mind that your insurance rates for your car or home can change just by moving to a different neighborhood.
5 - Trash pick up is different for those that move to a covenant controlled community that includes trash pick up. You will not have to make any contact. If your trash pick up is not included, you will need to choose a company and set up your services. There are several from which to choose. Go to the Internet or phone book and look up Residential Trash Pick Up. You can also find about about recycling as well.
