“We’re Coming After You” Says HUD Spokesperson

CBS Radio reported today that HUD is reporting higher levels of housing discrimination complaints nationwide than in recent years.  A HUD spokesperson stated that many such complaints have come from the area hit hardest by Hurricane Katrina.  HUD declared its intent to crack down on violations of Fair Housing laws and to engage in greater enforcement efforts dealing with Internet advertising that contains discriminatory language.

Elaborating on the report, the spokesperson commented about Websites which post tenant vacancies and which occasionally include housing advertising language which discriminates against the elderly, families with children and minorities.  She commented that HUD is aware of these sites and said "We're coming after you".

Just five months ago, a survey by the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center on the subject of housing discrimination was released.  In preparing the survey, the agency sent "testers" to inquire about rental vacancies at forty properties in the New Orleans area.

The survey found African-American renters received less favorable treatment than whites in over fifty percent of tester inquiries.  The Center plans to bring lawsuits against violators.

Eric,

I hope they do start cracking down on this discrimination. In our market, it's the Hispanics. It's a shame that people can't get past something so petty as the color of our skin.

Andrew, the Feds are pouring $5.2 Billion into that area for housing and you still have people fighting to get a roof over their heads.  It doesn't do any good to throw money at the situation if you have landlords engaged in discrimination.

It appears HUD is paying more attention to websites (an example might be CraigsList) that advertise properties for sale and for rent.  In the future, I believe HUD is going to hold those sites responsible for the content they publish on the Web.  That could be a growing liability for websites, possibly even this one.

Charles, I think it's gonna cause some discomfort and cries of "unfair" if they start holding sites like Craigslist responsible for what people post there.  Imagine the time and effort it will take to review all those ads one by one and determine if there's anything that might upset HUD.

It is a shame that there is discrimination in housing and HUD has to spend money on this .

Gita, I agree that it would be ideal if this were not necessary.  But have you noticed how often we're hearing about discriminatory acts and racial violence in the news lately?  There seems to be a resurgence of intolerant behavior going on.  And it's not only in the United States.  The European Union is also experiencing an increasing number of clashes between ethnic minorities.
