Improve Your Happiness Quota During Earth Hour

Started in Australia in 2007 where 2.2 million people and over 2,000 businesses turned off their lights in a stand against climate change Earth Hour has grown to include a global network of close to 5,000,000 supporters in 100 countries. Earth Hour is where we as an individual take a stand against climate waste and work together to live in harmony with nature.

Earth HourMy first participation in Earth Hour was in 2009. I remember hearing about it late and running around turning off the lights and then sitting here wondering what the heck I was doing just sitting in the dark. Last year I had help with Earth Hour as a storm came through and knocked out my electric so I had no choice. LOL.

But this year is different. I am not only participating in Earth Hour as a choice made ahead of time but also using the time in a way I have not done before. I am combining this years Earth Hour with the opportunity to raise my happiness quota. Yes you heard that right. I am combining this years Earth Hour with the opportunity to raise my happiness quota.

Happy QuotaSome time ago I heard that spending 'quiet time' or 'noiseless time' for a few minutes each day has proved to help raise one's happiness quota. Most people can benefit with just a minute or two a day and see wonderful results and if they allow more time per day the results improve as well. So I decided to give it a try and have been giving myself the gift of a few minutes a day for a couple weeks now. Mostly in my car as I am driving with no music or phone. I must say it has helped so.... I have decided that this Earth Hour would be the perfect time to up my happiness meter even more.

This years Earth Hour begins at 8:30 pm this Saturday March 26th 2011. And even if raising your happiness quoto is not on your agenda at least participate in helping to curb our climate usage in a grand stand kind of way.

Hi Martha - As we all strive to reach balance in our lives, our happiness quota is something we don't actually think about.  And if everyone participated in Earth Hour, I wonder what the progression of darkness across the country would look like from space.  An interesting thought.

Susan- Wow- the progression of darkness would be an awesome sight to see wouldn't it. As for our happiness quota I for one was not striving for it until recently. I do not think of myself as an unhappy person but taking a couple minutes a day in silnce has certainly been helping to balance out some stress areas. :0)

Martha what a great idea!  We definitely don't think enough about our emotional state sometimes because we are so busy.  Love the post!

Martha--Yes, I have heard about Earth Hour, but have not actively participated.  Although I can say that I have done other things to promote a healthy climate and a greater appreciation of the world around me.  Each day I like to start and end my day in quiet reflection.

Thanks for the reminder.  Saturday we are actually going to a Belly Dance Event.  Perhaps I will have pictures to share.

What a great idea Martha. It seems so hard to get a few minutes of peace of solitude. It seems to only come in the bathroom LOL! Will give it a try, that old happiness quotient is important. Now doing it for one hour is risky, might fall completely asleep! LOL!
