Vision....Action....Legacy

"My theory for this place is that it should be made the most attractive place in the West for homes--a place for schools, colleges, literature, science, first-class newspapers and everything the above imply."

--William Jackson Palmer, 1871Garfield Elementary in Colorado Springs

William Palmer, the founder of Colorado Springs,  had a vision.  He used the profits from his railroad enterprise to help build Colorado Springs and to develop a parks system.  In doing so, he created a legacy.

Built in 1886, the Garfield school, provides an example of the "quality" of structures that were built during that era.  It has been said that size and detailing provided "concrete testimony of the growing wealth and permanence of the town." http://www.springsgov.com/plan/historic/documents/RPTCOSPfin.pdf  This school building is located on corner of Wahsatch and Willamette, in the downtown Colorado Springs area.  It is now the home of the Community Prep school.

As I write this, I realize that tomorrow is the start of: A new morning A new day A new week. How will I spend the next 24 hours?

Will I make it count?  What about you?

Sondra, I lived in Westminister CO for 15 years and always loved the Springs.  One of the things I dearly love about the Springs is they have retained a conservatism that you just don't see as much in Denver.

William Palmer with building the city Sondra had a vision which turned into what I think we all want when we pass, a legacy. I like the before black and white photo and the current color one too. I have a philosophy in life that says it ALL counts. Sounds like William Palmer knew that as well.

The Garfield School and The Lowell School were certainly indications of the desire to draw people into making Colorado Springs a place to raise your family.  As a City, it doesn't get much prettier.  My step-son went to Garfield when it was still an elementary school.  Great place - I taught my girls to drive in the parking lot :) Nice Post!  Thanks so much for the memory!!!

Marchel, the Springs is a great place.  Yet at this time of year, I do miss the spring flowers in Texas.

Stan, I hope you come and visit Colorado again!

Larry, coming from Texas, I must admit Colorado Springs is a great place to visit and to live.

Gary, I always enjoy stories about founders who were willing to invest their own money and time to bring their vision to fruition.  It goes to show that individuals do make a difference.

Fred,  thank for taking the time to stop by and comment.  Maybe you can visit Colorado Springs again sometime in the future.

Billi, thanks for the compliment!

Mimi, you are welcome.  Your comment about teaching your girls to drive in the parking lot brought back memories of my Dad teaching us to drive in a parking lot on the Texas A&M University campus...... Good memories.

Sondra- It is truly amazing what one person can accomplish when they put their full efforts into it. Make me wonder what kind of difference each one of us could make if we would take the time and effort to try.
