I Died. Who's Next? CAPS - Community Action Planning Students - We're Proud of IDABEL HIGH SCHOOL CAPS STUDENTS, IDABEL OKLAHOMA 74745 

 

Car Crashes are the #1 Killer of Teens! 

There is a great Idabel High School group of volunteer students that are VERY involved in their community and in their high school to promote good things and make a difference in their world.  CAPS - Community Action Planning Students at Idabel High School in McCurtain County Oklahoma.  

 

CAPS recently staged  a car wreck for the Idabel High School Students to experience.. hopefully to encourage safe driving amongst high school students. 

 

It was staged during the week just prior to Prom, a night that there have always been more wrecks involving our youth than many other occasions.  

These CAPS volunteer students made these points that: 

• You should not drink and drive (or if under the influence of any drugs whether legal or illegal)  

• You should not talk on your phone and drive.
  

• You should not text and drive. 

• You should practice safe driving.

 

Don and I were invited to attend the presentation at the high school. 

Believe me, This CAPS group of volunteer students at Idabel High School made the points that careless and reckless driving can lead to death.. either your own, your friends, or your family..

 

Idabel High School CAPS volunteers were positioned around and in the staged wrecked car, fake blood all over them, pieces of metal stuck in their skin (fake), cuts and just a gory mess in general.  Our granddaughter is the one hanging out the back glass.

 

The Idabel Police Department participated by responding to the fake accident along with an ambulance from the McCurtain County EMS Authority. 

 

After the ambulance loaded one of the accident victims, the students were taken inside to the auditorium.  I did not know about that part ahead of time so I missed it.  inside the Auditorium, each student that had "died" in the wreck talked to the student body about how much they were going to miss them, etc.. saying  "good-bye"  while still covered in all of the bloody mess from the wreck.

 

About an hour after Don and I left, Chaz called me to come get her so she could shower.. seems the "corn syrup" blood didn't want to wash out easily and she was miserable.. hair stuck together, t-shirt stuck.. I did NOT like looking at her in that "blood" and was sure glad when she got cleaned up and glad that we still have Chaz with us and that it was all "make believe".

 

 

Idabel High School was chosen as a TOP 26 Project Ignition School in the State Farm/National Youth Leadership Council to address teen driver safety issues across North America. They received a $2000 award to support their teen driver safety campaign and a chance to compete to be named as one of the the 10 schools chosen as Leader Schools for 2011-2012.  

 

"Wreckles" is the teen driver safety campaign for Idabel High School and their entry program into the Projet Ignition Award. Why Real Events Can Kendal Life's Expectations Swiftly. 

 

"Changing unsafe NORMS and driving behaviors of teen drivers.  The acceptance of unsafe driving NORMS must change, for teen driving behaviors to change.  Through youth leadership and teen identififed unsafe vehicle safety behaviors, youth lead activities and events, teens will change their behaviors to safe driving behaviors."

 

The CAPS volunteer group is just one of the many ways that Idabel High School works with students to prepare them to be productive and responsible members of society.  We are proud of Idabel High School, the CAPS program, and our granddaughter for being active in these types of worthwhile endeavors. Creda Impson is the co-ordinator for the CAPS program at Idabel High School.  She does a wonderful job.
