This book by David M. Walker, President & CEO of Peter G. Peterson Foundation, former comptroller general of the U.S., and CEO of the U.S. Government Accountability Office from 1998 to 2008, is a look at the problems in our economy from an insider's viewpoint. His education and unique experience give us an insight into the cause of our current issues and the book proposes workable solutions, although they are likely to be resisted by those who refuse to see what's ahead.
Walker describes our government policies and procedures as wasteful and bureaucratic (no surprises there) and blames the country's issues on all of us - our politicians of both parties for not putting the good of the country first and us for letting the politicians get away with it. Walker believes that the country can be saved and another crisis averted if we understand the issues and are willing to take action to correct them. He doesn't have much hope that politicians will turn things around and urges Americans to join with him in a grassroots effort to incite Congress to enact the necessary changes. Walker warns that if we don't take action now, another crisis worse than the financial crisis that started in 2008 will be our fate.
In comparing Walker's ideas with those in the Wiedemer book, Aftershock: Protect Yourself and Profit in the Next Global Financial Meltdown, there are similarities in the issues that are described and the crisis that is coming if action isn't taken. While Walker thinks it's still possible to turn things around, the Wiedemers assume government won't take the necessary action and catastrophe is inevitable. If Walker and the Wiedemers are correct about the economic problems still to come, it will have a drastic effect on the U.S. and the world.
