WordPress.org to Hell and Back

Wordpress LogoWell, it's been an awful week as it goes in the WordPress world. It also didn't bode well for having a happy wife either.

Monika's wordpress blog went down just after I had upgraded to version 2.3. She was not a happy camper. The initial error message that I received was "

"ERROR: WordPress requires Cookies but your browser does not support them or they are blocked."

After that I contacted my web-hosting company and submitted a "support "ticket", well after 13 hours of not hearing anything from them I finally went online and entered into a chat with one of the support techs. The  chat support version of their support group is in the Ukraine. He really couldn't help much and he said I should wait for the ticket to be processed.

The next morning I decided to call my web-hosting company and talk directly with a tech. He was able to make some changes to my sql-database and all looked ok until I started to work on Monika's blog. Yikes another problem.

I returned the call to the web-host and got another tech with the same first name and he told me the previous  tech had changed a prefix in the database and that now has Monika's blog really screwed up. Tech says wait for ticket.

URGGHH I am fuming now and still no resolve. Monika is now at wit's end and I am bearing the brunt of it.

So, now I finally try and get a hold of Mark Flanders who I know is a WordPress guru who is knowledgeable with the files that make up WordPress like .php etc..

Mark stayed on the phone with me for about 3 1/2 hrs to say the least as we battled through the database by accessing my server through myphpadmin and mysqlserver.  What a learning experience for me.

Mark Flanders while helping me.Mark was seeing double by the time it was time for him to grab lunch. He is 3 hours behind us.

Mark told me about his hosting company Blue Host, who he said was great with Tech Support. I decided what the heck, I'll give them a call, I haven't anything to lose.

I reached Alex at Blue Host and he was extremely polite and helpful as I told him I was not a customer of Blue Host, he spent about 15 minutes helping. He created a new user in my database and it looked like all was good. I hung up the phone.

Then I realized I couldn't access the admin panel, then I thought about it for a second and then I was able to get in by typing wp-admin after Monika's URL and then I received another error message.

This one stated: http://monikamcgillicuddy.com/wordpress/wp-dmin/install.php this message wanted me to reinstall the WordPress software. I said what have I got to lose again? I reinstalled and then I received this error: The page isn't redirecting properly Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.
* This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept cookies."

I called Blue Host again and tried to get Alex back but no luck and after a little while I tried again with no luck.

So, on the phone to Mark again, we worked for another couple of hours and Mark had to go home and take care of his family. Monika's site was still down and not functioning. I felt bad for Mark but at least he was showing off his talent. He is one smart cookie.

I called my web host company and again NO HELP!! I got pissed and sent in another ticket and when I called to complain, all they told me was that every time I submitted a ticket it went to the bottom. They did tell me that an administrator was working on it. Ya Right. A few days earlier I asked for a backup of my data prior to September 27th and after 5 days they said it was empty. I did keep my own backup and it was on my hard drive and on the server.  They just didn't know how to work with it.

I did a ton of research on WordPress.org and even posted a couple of questions on the support forums and received no answers.

Monika said Maureen McCabe said I should read Jay Thompson's blog and suggested I contact him to see if he could help. Jay suggested I contact Dave Smith at the Real Estate Blog Lab , I did and he was very helpful but he was a little over my head and Mark always said he didn't like to delete files so Dave had suggested maybe at last resort to delete a couple of folders and reinstall WP 2.2 version after I get my web-host to re-install my back-up. I just didn't have enough faith in my web-host.

So now I decided to call Blue Host one more time before I take on Dave's plan of action. I am caller number 13 and within 10 minutes I am connected to a Kevin who said Alex was not in and he said he was very familiar with WordPress and would help. I was on the phone with him all of 5 minutes at the most.

What Kevin did was redirect my WordPress and Blog URL address in the options panel in the Admin section of Monika's WordPress.org blog.

See it all started when Monika said that we should have our Blogs redirect from http://www.monikamcgillicuddy.com/wordpress to http://monikamcgillicuddy.com/wordpress.

I called our web-hosting company and they did a re-direct in the .htaccess file on their server for our blog about a week before we upgraded. See at least I did what I was told to do.

In reality I should have known to change those options in the photo above but I didn't and I really believe it was a nightmare from the get go and I believe there are a lot more issues to Version 2.3 out there than meets the eye. I would hold off for awhile if I were you.

I just want to say I really appreciate all the help I received from Mark Flanders, he is a true gentleman with a lot of knowledge and I am truly in his debt for all his efforts. He truly epitomizes what Active Rain is all about.

I will switch over to Blue Host and I will subscribe to Jay Thompson , the Phoenix Real Estate Guy and Dave Smith at the Real Estate Blog Labs and I will stick with WordPress, Lord knows I have a lot of time invested in it.

I already have Soundbite blog in my Feedreader

Jay, I'm so glad I didn't click the upgrade button. Unbelievable. So we have our own Mr. Wordpress here. Isn't this what is so fantastic about AR. But, what a nightmare you went through. I did check out Monika's blog there today and it was up and running.

Jay - I'm sorry that you are having such trouble with 2.3. I had some issues, but they were small and I was able to adjust them. Unfortunately the issue you had is not UNCOMMON and is one of the biggest complaints that I've heard about upgrading to 2.3. Keep the faith, WP is a great platform.

As to .org having more traffic than .com - I love "tweaking" but the SEO is not my specialty. However I read (and of course I can't find the link) that the .com sites do not allow for the customization of blogs as much as the .org sites, which causes some issues. What are the issues, I don't remember. I just saw this when I made the decision to move to WP from blogger and went with .org because that was what my experience had been with in the first place.

Crystal:

I am setting up a new blog on wordpress. I am having someone do the intial set up to save time. They would like to host it on their server. It seems I have less control over my leads and inquiries this way. Is there any practical reason why a designer would want to host it on their own server rather than having me put it on one of the recommended servers or on .org?

Carolyn, it sounds like they want the revenue from hosting. A real designer wouldn't care where you put your site since they make their living designing rather than hosting. As for your leads and inquiries, almost any setup you choose should give you equal control. On the other hand there may be some differences in what kind of web traffic reporting you can get from different servers.

OMG, Carolyn, do not host it on their server. If they disappear, don't pay their bill, whatever, you are stuck. I know someone who's going through this right now, the woman hosted several people's blogs and websites on her server, then disappeared leaving these people without websites.

Hosting is cheap. I use Dreamhost which is $22 for the first year and $120 each year thereafter. Dayana Host will start you out at $15/year.

As for web traffic reporting, use Google Analytics. It's free and comprehensive.

Joe Peffer (AR member in Columbus) had a story about his blog host disappearing, I have no idea if it had anything to do with a designer but the story haunts me when I think about blog hosting.

The pricing Crystal is quoting is real cheap. I think Blue Host is about $7 a month... which I thought was very inexpensive... even if I am too dumb to take advantage of their customer service I am thrilled that if I ever get a clue I have a host that has such good customer service according to Jay McGillicuddy and Mark Flanders (Mr. WordPress.org)

As far as being able to explain the good WordPress.org SEO to Elaine. Or how SEO for a WordPress.com blog vs. a WordPress.org blog will differ... I have an SEO quiz posted here on AR. The results show I am a novice. I know very, very little about SEO.

There are people on AR who do understand SEO. I try to read tech blogs outside ActiveRain that are way over my head (obviously only a little has sunk in to my brain.) Maybe somewhere on the Tomato Blog or on RCG or on Bloodhound Blog, Jim Cronin, Dustin Luther or Greg S. explain why WordPress.org works so well. Maybe at the beginning of the Project Blogger someone wrote about it...as the apprentices were setting up blogs.  I know I have read from some bloggers I trust to use a WP.org blog.   To me it's just magic.

Carolyn - I would host it on YOUR server. By a domain name, and go from there. I use GoDaddy and while they aren't the best - or the cheapest - they do reasonably well. I have a story similar to Joe (from Maureen's comment) and went for a little more expensive program hoping they'd survive. I've been with Godaddy for about five years and have had zero complaints.  - Toby

Carolyn here is a link to webhosting companies that WordPress recommmends. Blue Host is number one and I highly recommend them, their service was way over the top for me. I wasn't even a customer of theirs and they still helped me more than once.

Toby, thanks for the input and it was your WordPress site that I saw many months ago that started me down this dusty trail. In the beginning we both used the Mistylook theme and you changed the photos and that's what got me hooked. Now if I can only learn how to mess with CSS.

Suzanne, we both have been working out regularly lately and I am glad we both are back at it. Sure does make a difference.

Jay, Maureen told me about WebMonkey.com and it has some of the basic CSS codes. When I use WebSiteGrader, it recommends using CSS rather than HTML, so implementing it is on my to-do list. Do you have a good teaching site for CSS?

Hi Elaine, no I don't, sorry, I haven't got that far yet. Mark Flanders recommends CSS also. I'll get there sooner or later.

Bring this thread back up, for those of you who wanted to know the difference between wordpress.org vs wordpress.com, I found the answer (I knew there was one, lol).

When you are blogging on wordpress.com and also here on active rain, you do not own the links back to you, the traffic, nor the posts and comments. Sure, the posts are yours because you wrote them, but if wordpress.com or active rain ever go out of business or if you ever want to move your posts over to your own server, you've lost all your regular readers, your subscribers, and your comments. It's just always better to own your own.

OK in reply to Crystal's comment and for those real estate agents who have the beautiful Tomato Blogs and RSS Pieces blogs (and maybe other real estate specific blogs) how is that the same or different than a blog you own?  I know Colleen K. did an entry on RSS Pieces recently about the bloggers owns the content on RSS Pieces blogs recently... and of course that is a great company, very stable, great SEO...

TypePad blogs how do they compare to WordPress.org as far as owning the content?

I believe that as far as copyright rules go, you own what you wrote, but if the site goes byby, you're out of luck. I mean, the chances of that happening are probably slim to nil. I think the big one to think about is that if anyone links to your blog, and we all know how important incoming links are for SEO, then the blogging platform gets the SEO credit and not your website. That's something huge to miss out on.

And I am guilty of this too. I took down my own blog and only have the one here. Bad, bad me.

and the made for real estate agent blogs are on a WordPress.org chassis from what I understand and they have wonderful SEO (as we can see...)  so it may not be an issue... if you continue with their blog forever so you don't lose those links by moving your content to another site.

OMG Jay,

you are a patient man...  I would have gone crazy half way through the phone calls...  And probably had a BBB complaint pending  :)

I'm glad that everything worked out for you, but look at the bright side... Now you know something, that you didn't before... And way to GO, to keep calm....
