The Hollyhock House in Los Angeles - a beautiful creation of Architect Frank Lloyd Wright

By
Real Estate Agent with L.A. Property Solutions BE# 01342428

Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House is a beautiful example of this famed architect's work. The Hollyhock house was built for oil heiress Aline Barnsdall between 1919 and 1921 and was Frank Lloyd Wright's first Los Angeles project.  The majority of his buildings are actually in Oak Park, Illinois where he designed 25 structures that were built between 1889 and 1913. Write is famous for his prairie style architecture of open spaces, and earth hugging buildings and furniture to match!

Frank Lloyd Wright Hollyhock House in Hollywood California

Frank Lloyd Wright had a prolific 70-year career during which he designed a plethora of amazing buildings. He has been called America's most innovative and creative architect and for good reason. 17 of his buildings have been designated by the American Institute of Architecture architectural as major contributions to American culture.

exterior details of the Hollyhock house depict the hollyhock flowerThe Aline Barnsdall's "Hollyhock House", was named for the use of the hollyhock flower design used both on the homes interior and exterior as well as the furniture inside. As other Frank Lloyd Wright creations, the Hollyhock house has evokes a Mayan feel and makes perfect use of the site on which it was built.

Guests are not allowed to take interior photos except on very rare occassions.  If you have the opportunity to see the Hollyhock house, notice how the theme of this flower is used throughout the interior and exterior archticture, window glass and particularly the furniture pieces.

The Hollyhock House was originally built as part of Frank Lloyd Wright's "Olive Hill", a thirty-six acre site theatre community, which never came to fruition.  Aline Banrsdall Olive Hilss was to include a performing arts center where she could produce her own avant-garde plays.  The Hollyhock house was to be her own residence, and the campus was also to include guest house "A" for the theater director, guest house "B",  artists studios, ahd retail shops. However, only Barnsdall's resdence, the Hollyhock House and the 2 guest houses were completed before the project was abandoned.

Wright was working Tokyo's Imperial Hotel during the construction of the Hollyhock House so much of the construction supervision was left in the hands of his capable son and landscape architect Lloyd Wright and his assistant, famed architect Rudolf Schindler.

barnsdall park wine tasting in the summer with Silver Lake WineAfter losing interest in completing the Olive Hill theater complex as originally conceived,  Aline Barnsdall donated the Hollyhock House and eleven surrounding acres to the City of Los Angeles for use as a public art park in 1927.  Today the house is part of Barnsdall Art Park in Los Feliz Adjacent East Hollywood with a local art gallery and theater and the grounds are leased for various events throughout the year.  Currently there are weekly Farmer's Markets held ath the park and during the summer month Silver Lake Wine hosts wine tasting events. Funds from such events combined with private donations have been used to rehabilitate the Hollyhock House and bring it back to its original glory for Angelinos and visitors to the area to enjoy.

Barnsdall Art Park is located at 4800 Hollywood Boulevard in the East Hollywood area of Los Angeles. Admission to the park is free but there is a nominal fee to view the interior of the Hollyhock House.  Public tours are offered Wednesdays through Sundays
12:30, 1:30, 2:30 & 3:30 PM without reservations and private tours can be scheduled as well. Check the Hollyhock Hock site for Park and Tour Specifics.

Hi Karen,  Thanks! I had no idea it was featured :-)  I actually wrote about this property as a precursor to another post. There is an upcoming event taking place at Barnsdall Park so I thought writing about the park and the Hollyhock now would give me something to link back to.  You aren't so far from L.A.  Have you seen this place?  I can't imagine living in it (or the current for sale Ennis House for that matter) but it really is some interesting architecture!

A nice tribute.  And FLW's birthday is June 8th.  We have very few properties here that are designed by Wright . . . and with Barb (#4) I grew up in the area as well, and do remember seeing all those wonderful homes AND offices.

Wow!  So many comments!  I'm glad to see my post had some readers, sometimes you never know! Thanks to all of you for your comments!

Dale- Agreed he has some very interesting designs. I was surprised to learn that the majority of his work is actually in IL. I may have to take a trip out that way and see some of these places!

Barb- Certain areas of California have HUGE diversity in architectural styles. We have so many homes built in the different eras by a variety of now-famous architects.  I do get a laugh when someone contacts me looking for a home in a gated community in the Hollywood Hills.  I guess they don't realize that delevopers in the 20's and 30's didn't do PUD's like they have in more recent years. We just don't have a lot of 'newer' inventory unless someone tore someting down and replaced it with a more contemporary home. Fortunately we have alot of historical preservation laws in place so it's not easy to do that with many of of the fabulous old homes.

Victoria- I think we have a mutual admiration society going, LOL!  I appreciate your compliments and I have you to thank for alot of that!

Frank Lloyd Wright Ennis House in Los Feliz

Carla- I bet you remember the Ennis House then. It's been on the market for 2 years with a starting price of $7,000,000!  It's down $1,000,000 from the starting price, but it needs work and will require a very special buyer.

Evelyn- I'm glad you enjoyed the post. There are definitely alot of things to see in So Cal besides Disneyland. LOL!

Cheryl - Alot of museums and historic properties don't allow interior photos.  I've heard that it's becuase flash photography can deteriorate objects if it is done repeatedly. Another reason is probably for the enjoyments of those touring the property. Most of these older, historic homes are dimly lit or lit mainly by filtered sunlight. Flashing cameras could certainly make the tour less pleasant and not allow visitors to experience the home in it's natural state.

Cliff- There is alot of information out there on this prolific architect. I would love  to see more examples of his work in different areas. I'm sure his earlier styles are quite different from his later ones as his work evolved.

Scott- Thanks for the link on where to get more info

Gretchen- It's a very interesting house but the whole property is nice. I'm going to write a follow up piece on the birthday celebration planned for June 10. It's a fundraiser to renovate the grounds around the house. It really is a very pretty property and nice that people can go have a picnic lunch in front of this fabulous structure during regular park hours.

Jeff- If you are free June 10, you might want to come to the birthday celebration- you are pretty close! Interior photos WILL be allowed that day! Watch for my next post on that!

Sharon- Thanks for that info. I've not heard of Frank Klutho. I believe a bit of investigation is in order!

Robert- definitely worth a look and the park makes it pretty easy to tour the home.

Hi Daniel- yes, impressive in deed. I have to admit it is also very cool to have something like this so available to the public. Silver Lake wine is doing wine tasting evenings on the lawn outside on Friday evening during the summer.
