An Era Ends with Changing Technologies

Fox News has announced that the Glenn Beck program will close out its run on the Fox News Channel on June 30, 2011.

Whether you are a fan of Glenn or not, most would agree that he has had an impact on our cultural debate.  I have been a fan of Glenn Beck since his early radio shows before the conversion to political theater.  I am a frequent listener, constrained by his inconvenient time slot on Fox.

I do not agree with everything Glenn says - I doubt that he would agree with everything I say.  But I do not doubt that he believes every word and I find his passion refreshing.  I also do agree with his main points.  I think he has been prescient and well informed on the social trends and the world wide impact of the events that we hear about from him - frequently months and sometimes years ahead of the mainstream media.

I will miss his Fox programing but will become a subscriber to his new vehicle GBTV.com which will feature, initially, video of his radio program and by September, his own two hour format streaming video from his internet fortress Beck.  I look forward to it.

Well Ted, I think we found something to disagree on...Glen Beck is an opportunistic fear-mongering clown that uses outrageous conspiracy theories while constantly drawing false conclusions using ambiguous historical fact.  IMHO he is/was a deterrent to rational and informed debate and appealed to the lowest common denominator of peoples paranoia.

Oh, I'm thinking Roger Ailes had more to do with Beck leaving than 'changing technologies.'  I believe Ailes is trying to ease Fox News out of the 'stark-raving-mad' category.

I must confess that I found his earlier stuff on Fox a bit more valuable & digestible. As time went on, he just got a bit too incessant/preachy to me. Just tended to grate on me, similar to Hannity. But still, I would much rather watch Beck then the multitudes of left-leaning drones who attempt to mimic responsible journalism. I am sorry to see Beck leave the Fox line-up. Who/what is taking his slot?

Ted - I to was more of a fan of his earlier radio program.

Karl - I do believe that most of his allegations have tended to be found somewhat less than imaginary.

The greatest contribution of Glenn Beck is that he inspired debate.  Many do not like what he had to say, but instead of taking him on with Civil Discourse most chose to call him names, and attempt to marginalize the messenger (some of that here perhaps?).

Our founding fathers did not all agree on everything that they produced, but they were wise enough to let the debate find its own end rather than dismissing messages because they disliked the person, or style of the messenger.  Despite the main stream media painting him as an unintelligent, fear monger he was very well read, and far more of his points pass a fact check than many of our so-called "leaders."

I also like Glenn, I believe we can still catch him on radio, or at least on the net, at our convince.

Karl - we actually have lots of things we disagree on - I have just been pleased to find a number of things we can agree on in our discussions here.  We will not find agreement here, but thank you for your opinion.  I did not mean to imply changing tech stuff was the cause of separation - only that Glenn will continue to irritate you in a new media should you decide to watch.

I talked more about Glenn's departure from Fox in my comments to my previous post.  My point here was to mention the new site where he will rise again like a phoenix from the ashes.

Fox News actually tends to be just as fair and balanced as they say they are in the news programing.  But the opinion programming trends well to the right.  But it is a business decision and the programing is judged by ratings.  I believe that Glenn's ratings may have slipped a bit and some of the Fox advertisers did not want to sponsor his show.  I think it may have been just that simple.

As much as I like Glenn and his programming, I will admit he could sometimes sound a bit like the Peter Finch character in the movie, Network.  I am glad he has found another media role to play.  His is a voice I think we need to hear.

Well said, Mr. Baker...."pleased to find a number of things we can agree on"....if only more online discussions were as civilly minded!...

Rich - nice to see you.  I have not seen an announcement on programing in the 5p eastern timeslot.

If I were to guess, I might speculate Judge Napolitano.  He has a show on Fox Business opposite Bill O'Reily at 8p (Eastern) and is a frequent and popular contributor on Fox News Channel.

Ron - I agree with you.  It seems to me that when the picture became too fuzzy, Glenn would use his religion (LDS, by the way) to provide discipline to his thinking and his predictions.  Many of his viewers were simply not comfortable reducing all political discourse to religious themes.  (several commenting here)

I note that if you read earlier American political history, it seems that politics has always been a contact sport here and some of the personal attacks in the news papers of the period make the name calling of today seem kind and gentle in comparison.

Thanks to all for stopping by.

I am sorry to see him go, but since I usually couldn't get the program live, I missed much of his show.  Maybe the new venture will produce more good debate for all.

Ted,

I never followed Glenn on the radio, and his time slot on TV is bad for me, so it is very rare I see him, but when I have a chance, he glues me to the screen. Thanks for putting this link here.

@Ron Brown - excellent comment.
