Those Small Town Folks! ALWAYS in our business! (A new perspective)

The girls!

When I hear the words "small town" the first word that comes to mind is gossip. At least that is what I used to think until I moved to a small town and found out what their definition of being in every-body's business is.

I remember when our neighbor had his heart attack. He had been planning on taking down a dead tree and of course, all the neighbors knew about it. While he was laying in the hospital bed, those same neighbors got together and took down the dead tree and even cleaned up the mess! They didn't want him to have to worry about it.

Another neighbor had battled cancer for several years. When it got to the point that he could no longer walk, the men's prayer group from the Riverside Baptist Church came and built a handicap ramp that lead from the driveway up and on to his porch to make it easier to wheel him in and out of the house. Oh how Otis was blessed by this showering of love from his brothers.

When Uncle Gene (no relation -- that's just what everyone called him) was dying, Aunt Dot couldn't bear to leave his side. The neighbors called before heading to town to see if they could pick up prescriptions, groceries or anything else that they might need. You see, Uncle Gene and Aunt Dot had become family.

In times like these I often hear "There is nothing that we can do, its out of our control."  That is simply not true. While we cannot change the situation, we can pray to the one who can, and trust Him that He knows what is best. Then...  we can look for little ways to show that we care.

Those small town folks are always in our business -- Thank God!

Joni--sounds like the town I grew up in.  Now I live in much larger city, but people still refer to Erie as 'big small town.'  It's the spirit of the folks who live there.

I am going to click 'SUGGEST' and hope others do, too.

Joni, I like your perspective! I also grew up in a town of 2700 people. They didn't use the tele-phone they would simply tele-neighbor.

I was not suppose to get into a car with anyone in our little town before asking...makes sense...but one day I did. My swim coach said, "Hop in" and I didn't hesitate. He drove me across town to take me home.

By the time we drove up my mom was standing on the porch waiting for me! Ooopsie. Someone saw me...told someone else and that someone else had called her. *sigh*

Very sweet post!

Oh, and let me interject! My swim coach was only 17 years of age. Oh, he was so cute. I had such a crush on him. Later in life he asked me to marry him. I could still hear my mom saying, "no" so I didn't. Okay, it wasn't her fault. He wanted 10 kids!

sometimes our news is on the street before we have even told our immediate family!  My husband was born and raised in Lake Charles we can't go anywhere without him seeing someone he knows even if it was someone he played baseball with when he was 10 years old!

Joni~ Until you live in a small town, it's difficult to appreciate the benefits.  Our town is fair sized, but to me, our community feels small and we watch out for each other too!

Joni, what a special post. It is really a nice feeling to be around people who care. There is not much of that left in this world.

Joni, I never lived in a small town and when my parents moved to one, I was amazed how everyone tries to help everyone.....living in a big city we barely know our neighbors outside of a hello or good morning....

Hi Joni!  Cute post and oh, so true!  I live in a large metropolis but, am ever so grateful for the small town feel that we have in our community.  We take care of one another and help raise each others' children--it's definitely something that I'm thankful for!

Just home from a visitation for a funeral of a business owner in Riverside (Population 425). The family is from the neighboring town of Dodge. Our churches just held a revival together. There were over 500 people there and pastors from 5 of the churches! AMAZING! :)))

Mary: Thank you for the suggest! I love the small town life... love EVERYthing about it. Even the nosy neighbors that would give you the shirt off their back if they thought you needed it!

Debra: Oh my gosh! TEN kids... I hope you RAN! FASTTTTTT!

Marilyn: That's funny! But ya still gotta love it!

Donna: I never had a clue! Lived outside of Dallas! Moved here when I was 30!

Mike: You should have been at the visitation tonight for one of our local businessmen. The sheriff was there, and the constable... and the retired constable... Aunt Mary signed the book "Aunt Mary" and there were lots of Opie's! :))) AMAZING turnout!

Frank and Karen: AMEN!

Endre: By the time I was a teenager in Mesquite (could walk to Dallas, literally), it was the same.. we barely knew the neighbors.

Debe: It takes a village to raise a child! Glad you are a part of that village! ♥

I, too, grew up in rural America close to a small town. I agree that this is one of the best places ever to have grown up. I love that sense of belonging.

What a blessing it must be for you to live in such a healthy environment. Gossip or no gossip, it's got to be all good. The ladies in the photograph are a hoot and holler! You always have the most fun posts to read.

Bringing you home...

I love this! We were camping when I was a teenager and our car broke down in a "small town"... it's something I'll never forget. We ended up eating lunch in a restauraunt while my dad was at the auto shop with the car and my mom was talking to us about how we were gonna get home. She meant directions, but someone mistook it, and I watched as the whispers went around the whole place.... "They don't know how they are getting home, they don't know how they are getting home..." It was a very weird feeling. Now, looking back, I'm comforted by it because they would have taken care of us but then it kind of scared me. :)

Joni, I live in a large city, but our cul-de-sac is a "small town", and everyone on our block help each other in good times and bad times.    One of our neighbors found out she had breast cancer, her husband was in Chile on business, and we had a bad snowstorm, about 3 feet or so.   We made sure her drive was shoveled, and she had use of her SUV.     I am lucky, it isn't always like that!
