Back on 4/29/11, I decided I was going to do a sprint triathlon on 7/9/11 with a friend.
I have never done anything like this before, despite being a tomboy growing up , and having played basketball, tennis, soccer, horseback riding, softball, swimming, gymnastics - all of these having occured substantial years ago.
I started slow, with jog/walk intervals, and dropping in on spinning classes, and laps.
Today, I did 30 minutes spin and then jogged/walked 2.5 miles. Pool wise, I've completed 36 laps (with rests) which is 748 yards in one session.
Eight weeks ago, I don't know that I would have thought I would be able to state I had done all this!
So, here is what I have learned:
- Every goal needs a plan that makes small, attainable steps towards the goal.
- Everyone needs to be dedicated to their plan, and if it's not functioning, tweak it so it works for you.
- Make sure you have what you need tool/resource-wise to attain your goal. If you have to be creative (as I have been by swimming in various pools), so be it.
- If you miss one day, don't beat yourself up.
- Pace yourself - I learned A TON about myself, and my reserves, and I know I'm not done yet.
- Envision the goal - I just want to finish, so I'm able to work on these individual tasks without worrying about speed or time, for example.
- Find an accountability partner. I knew I was committed once my race buddy said she would do it with me.
- Tell others about your goal - I blogged about the sprint triathlon, once again committing myself more.
- Remember, you can do anything you put your mind to!
