Bird Watching in Florida: Beware of the Egret

Florida Birds:  Beware of the Egret

For those of you who are a little squirmish,  you may not want to see these pictures.  When I looked out the window this morning, I caught this white Egret having his breakfast in my backyard.

It's not unusual for these big white birds to walk around in the backyards of Hernando Beach homes and look for lizards, or even small fish and crabs along the seawalls.  Much to my surprise, this Egret scored a bigger catch this morning.

Hey - a fella's gotta eat!  When I lived in Southern California, a white egret built a nest on my neighbor's roof.  He wasn't happy about it, but I thought the egret was beautiful to look at.  Now I visit some on the nature trail at the Vernal Pools here in Fair Oaks.

Alan and Michele, thanks, glad you enjoyed them.

Susan, I know... it's just that I usually chase away any cats who get near the birds and then this happens!  I think the little guy was already gone and didn't feel the torture...

Hi Silvia, what surprising photographs and you did not mean to capture dinner time on camera.  The egret is a beautiful bird.  Have a nice evening.

Just another member of the life cycle. We feed our cat ocean whitefish and tuna, and every time I look at the dish, I think of those poor ocean whitefish and tuna, but the food chain has to go on.

Silvia, Great pictures!  I didn't realize that egrets ate other birds.

Judith, I see them look for food all the time but this really was a surprise.

Jim, very true.  But at least the whitefish and tuna you feed to the cat come in a can!

Tony, I guess it's whatever the catch of the day might be!  I've never seen it before!  Now we know!

Hmm. Mama probably had some egret chicks to feed.  I've seen them take fish that size, so I guess this shouldn't be a surprise-but it is.

Robert, you're probably right.  I've seen them tackle large fish before as well but at least they are somewhat ergonomic... this catch had wings, legs, and head flopping in different directions.

Debra, I felt sorry for the little bird but he was already gone from the living so the only thing I could do is take some pictures!

Silvia, looks like this Egret was ready for its next meal, and that is the name of the game.

Joan, exactly! Nature's little drama played out in backyards everywhere!
