With gas prices still high and limited available time, I thought I would share a few of my favorite places to go for the day that won't cost you an arm and a leg.
San Marcos, TX - very partial to my ole stomping grounds, I went to Texas State University (*which I knew as Southwest Texas State). Go tubing down the River, loads of shopping at the Outlet Malls, go to Wonder Cave, eat at Grins or Herberts. Drinks - Nephews downtown.
Gruene, TX - Tubing down the Comal fabulouso!! Stay at the Gruene Mansion B & B, they have cabins also that overlooks the river. Dance at Gruene Hall which is the oldest beer joint in Texas - I saw Willie there a couple of times and many other entertainers it is always fun. Eat at the Gristmill anything they have is so good. There is a little wine shop on the left on the main road, I can't remember the name but they have great wine and gifts.
New Braunfels, TX - a tourist haven, there is so much to do in this quaint German town. A must do is Schlitterbahn - the water park of the world. It is wet and wild and fun!! You can take your own food and drinks so it is affordable. There is shopping at the many Outlet Malls, there is Wurstfest in November which is a huge hit - beer, beer, entertainment Umpa Umpa, sausage, brats and oh did I say beer? The food in this town is well, the best. Try Naegelin's Bakery, Gourmage, McAdoos, Kork's Wine Bar, Faust Brewing Company, Opa's, Coopers famous BBQ to name a few. Visit the New Braunfels Railroad Museum and Natural Bridge Caverns. If the Snake House is open, stop by to see Snakes of all types.
Fredricksburg, TX - if you like Bed and Breakfasts, Wine & Winery Tours, Cabins in the hill country, wildflowers and Trade Days. This is the place to go. Check out the peaches from surrounding areas, they are usually magnificent. Trade Days is the 3rd weekend of every month and has some really cool stuff. My husband and I go here alot and stay in a little cabin outside of town on private property with beautiful views and wildlife.
All these towns are within 60 to 90 minutes away and worth the drive in Central Texas.
