With the July 4th weekend approaching, many people will think of boating, fishing, jet skiing, swimming or enjoying any water sport for fun to cool down in the hot summer. Playing It Safe on the Water means remembering water safety rules while you have fun.
Many water sports fans enjoy relaxing with a cold beer for a fun day in the sun.
Drinking beer may add enjoyment to life also it will cause danger to your safety.
If you choose to drink alcoholic beverages, think twice before you do so and follow the rules of safety on the water to help you have a fun, happy and safe time.
Safety tips:
- remember your suntan lotion, sunglasses, and hat.
- enjoy food with your beer, do not drink on an empty stomach
- always obey buoys, channel markers and "No Wake" zones.
- stay clear of shallow water and congested areas.
- always have enough life jackets on board for everyone in the boat.
- give other boats and swimmers plenty of leeway and be alert for skiers down in the water.
- when you ski always wear a PFD (personal floatation device) designed for water skiing, even if you are a good swimmer.
- do not spray or "buzz" other skiers, swimmers or boats.
- never ski after dark.
- drink a lot of water to avoid dehydration; the combination of the motion, sun and wind can lead to serious fatigue.
