Financial Freedom Could Mean Sharing Your Money To Make A Sale

Have you ever had a discussion with colleagues about what areas they are willing to allocate money towards as a cost of doing business? If you have then you know that this discussion can get a little heated sometimes. I think it’s because sometimes we guard our money ( or perceived money) like a pit bull about to tear into a steak. salivating dog

Recently I contacted an agent regarding a home one of my clients saw. My client spotted a sign in the window and approached. The agent just happened to be at the property and they engaged in conversation regarding the details of the home. My client let the agent know that her agent would be in touch.

When I searched for the home, it did not appear on the MLS although I could find advertisements for the home across the internet. When I contacted the agent she appeared a bit annoyed. Guard dogWhen I told her that my client was ready to write up the offer, she quickly growled like a crazed guard dog....”My client does not want to pay another Realtor.” After I did a bit more probing, she then replied, “I don’t share my commission.” Now I think we have hit upon the real truth here. You see one of my questions that I posed to her was, “So let me get this straight...your client would rather only work with you even if it means passing up the opportunity to sale their property?” Perhaps this is where she thought that it might be better not to tell any more ‘little white lies’ about her clients true desires.

But here’s what I am getting at...this is not the first time I have spoken to an agent who seems to only be looking at the little picture. Yes you could try to double end every sale but at what expense are you willing to do it? dog for saleYou are leaving money on the table. I won’t even ask who’s interest you are really serving. If your clients knew that you actually put their interests secondary to your own monetary interests would they really utilize you as their trusted Real Estate advisor?

My client ended up coming into the office right after my conversation with this Realtor. I explained to her the situation and made it clear that if she really wanted the house, I would not stand in her way and that she could go back to this agent to write up the deal. My client staunchly stated that if the other Realtor would not work with me she would just find another house. So that’s what we set off to do. And there the other home still sits. Times are a little rough so it is understandably that people want to try to dog in netcovet their deals. But are you missing out on attaining a level of financial
freedom because you are holding on so tight? Are you about to get caught in your very own net? Even a pit bull has got to rest sometime.

Keisha - Wow - so far I haven't run into this but I am sure it is out there. These agents that behave like this as you say are doing such a disservice to their clients - and if the clients only knew would probably fire them. We all know that selling our own listings doesn't happen every day and if we truly understand real estate - it is other real estate agents that bring the buyers.

Linda, I have found that I am truly running into ALL kinds of things nowadays. Perhaps it is the desperation of the market, the every man for himself syndrome or something else. A wise agent definitely understands that on average  most agents do not sell their own listings and in fact welcome help from other agents in the market place. Thanks for reading and commenting.
