I've been working in Parsippany, New Jersey this week and decided today was a day to play. I spent Friday in one of my all time favorite cities enjoying everything from grilled Eggplant in the Meatpacking District to Chocolate Truffles with Grand Marnier in Rockefeller Center. Is there anything (minus the traffic) not to love about New York City??!
New York is one of my favorite cities and spending the day people watching is always a treat. It's been an amazing week and one that's ended with a rather interesting twist.
I returned this evening to a hotel over run by Chiller Theatre. This is a night that celebrates everything macabre, ghoulish and spooky. While anyone that knows me understands my love of Halloween, the real fun for me was seeing the droves of people lined up for Cassandra Peterson, aka Elivira the Mistress of the Dark.
Growing up in the Los Angeles area, I was enthralled with Elvira's vampy, cleavage bearing persona on Movie Macabre that gave the teen boys in my life much to appreciate.
The daughter of a costume designer, Cassandra was often seen dressed as Ginger from Gilligan's Island, Jeanie from I Dream of Jeanie and even Miss Kitty from Gunsmoke. While the kids in her then hometown of Colorado Springs, Colorado might have looked at her a bit strange, Cassandra says she always knew she was meant to spend her life entertaining while in costume.
Cassandra offered her dry and often sarcastic sense of humor as Elvira and made a name for herself with her bubbly commentary on B horror movies that would have been overlooked otherwise. Her infectious demeanor along with her signature style were an instant success.
After witnessing her cult following tonight, it's easy to see that Elvira the Mistress of the Dark and Empress of the Macabre is anything but ready to retire her costume.
She is still entertaining all of her fans. Oh and yes..most of them do happen to be men - both young and old!
