A 'galley' kitchen remodel

By
Real Estate Agent with Dan Edward Phillips

If you are considering doing a kitchen remodel yourself and you have a 'galley' kitchen, you may want to consider doing half the kitchen at a time.

One of the biggest problems with a kitchen remodel is the loss of the kitchen while the remodel is going on. In a smaller home with a galley kitchen, the loss is major.

Leave the side that contains the sink until last. Refrigerators may be moved around in most cases and plugged into another outlet. Electric stove are easy to unplug and move, if necessary build a platform on wheels and place your electric range on it to make it easy to move out of the way. If there are flooring issues where the sub-floor will require work or replacement the concept will not work. Daily 'clean up' will be very important, try to keep the kitchen as clean as possible. Removing all kitchen wear that is not required is a must, pack it and store it. Removal of tools and materials on a daily basis is also a must.

With good planning and a little extra work, you may be able to have 'half' a kitchen while you remodel. And 'half' a kitchen is better than no kitchen at all.

What great advice I never considered this before doing it this way leaves the kitchen functional at all times.

Wonderful information Dan. Having lived through a major kitchen remodel, I find this very good advice. Keep the sink if at all possible!

Hi Dan, good advise for living with it 'during'. The only alternative is to make reservations.

Reminds me of when my dad was remodling his kitchen, the roof above it ended up colasping. He had to get brand new roofing installation in Albuquerque.
