A Little Shocking Story

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Mountain Properties

Christmas will soon be upon us. Most will start decorating their homes for the holidays in the next few weeks. Also, it is getting cold. Many will pull out those convenient space heaters, plug in lights and favorite decorations.

If you look around you may be shocked. By this I mean at what lazy habits you, a client, friend or a family member may have. We are all told to be careful with extension cords. Don't use frayed ones, don't plug multiple items into one. Don't over do. But sometimes we all get lazy or forget.

electric cord warning label  I never stop to check the outlets at a home I may have listed. I may want to think about looking now. I may want to remind my kids that are younger and don't have time to worry about such things.  You see, this photo of a plug that melted and was ready to catch fire we just caught at a family member's home this week! Shocking but it could have been devestating.  Be sure to think about these cords and be safe!

It surely is something I never worried about and now I will think different.

Thanks so much for the reminder of this, so important at this time of year!  I will be certainly reminding my clients to look at their cords too!

Yes, probably a great little note to write to clients.

Paula, I saw an outlet the other day in a house; it is under a window.  It was visibly loose and hanging out from the wall.

Over the years, rain water has seeped down the wall under the window, and rotted the wall stud that the outlet box is attached to.

It presents a serious electrocution hazard.   I suggested that the owner contact a Licensed Electrician to fix it (and inspect the rest of the wiring and outlets).

Thank you for the reminder to be careful with the electrical cords...especially around the holiday season. You can never be too careful.

The holiday season does increase the chances for fire hazards like this.  With all of the extra extension cords in use then, extra caution is a must.

Fred, glad you caught that. I will be on the lookout from now on.

Rodney and Carlotta thanks for responding, we can't take safety for granted.
