Old is new....

plowOne of my favorite features about the house we bought to redo about five years ago was and is the back yard.  In addition to the artfully created flower beds is the fact that we are still discovering assorted yard art.

The photo for today is a remnant of a recently discovered antique plow.  It was tucked into assorted foliage under a large spreading Tallow tree.  It could not be seen well until fairly recently when the drought killed off several of the native vines.  Unfortunately one of the most prevailant vines remaining is an incredibly healthy poison ivy.  Sort of assures that no one is going to feel the need to touch it!  Provides a great teaching tool about how to recognise the PIow!

The plow  appears to have outlived its usefulness...  Its one of those perspective things.  When you consider the fact that the plow allows one to ponder where it was used, and how it was built,  it takes on a whole new purpose.  In its rustic condition and secluded location... it has a whole new idenity as a piece of yard sculpture.

Somehow, it seeems there are lessons to learn about finding the best in even what appears to be all used up.  Now that  I have found this old relic,  I enjoy seeing it , and I believe it would be missed if it were removed.

Hi Jeanne and Ralph - That is great.  I love stuff like that.  When my daughter and her husband bought a cattle ranch in Oregon, they notice what they thought was a pile of old wood under a tree, but when they finally got around to checking it out more carefully, they discoverd it was an old farm wagon that had crumbled and collapsed, but still had most of its parts - just a bit crumbled.  That was a dozen years ago and that wagon is still there.  They love it.

Hi Jeanne and Ralph - You wonder why one day it was just leaned up against that tree and never used again.  The stories it could tell!

Yeah!!  We Texans were a tough and industrious bunch!  When the mule was sick we just used the old push plow!  We actually had one of those things around the farm when I was a kid..... (never used it)

I believe that we had 2 of those push plows as a kid...they were ancient before we got them. One had a single plow head that we used to make a furrow to plant seeds. The other had about 6 tines that we used to generally break up clods...very poorly I might add.  Happy to get a gas roto tiller!!
