I found out yesterday that my eye doctor passed away. Some might not get close to their eye doctor, but I see him more than a few times a year because my entire family goes there. I've been going to this wonderful man about as long as I've been married, which is 27 years.
He wasn't a big man, in fact, he was quite short. He loomed large because he was a very kind, funny and compassionate man. We shared a lot of the same ideals as far as politics go and I've never left his office in a bad mood. I am hearing impaired and he was a mumbler so you'd think it wouldn't have been a match made in heaven, but as patient and doctors go, it worked. Even his receptionist is funny and I always laughed and enjoyed my visits there.
When my now 15 year old was 1, he was diagnosed with amblyopia, It turned out to be misdiagnosed but I went straight from the pediatric eye doctors to my doctor in tears. Because Max was dilated already, my doctor took us right in. He's been an advocate for me through all that Max has been through and a sounding board.
Both my boys, Mike 22 and Max 15, found him to be a funny and kind man and they regularly verbally sparred with him and they too, never left his office without a smile on their faces.
He was diagnosed with lung cancer not very long ago. I'm not sure how old he was but I know he wasn't 60 yet. He was somewhere around my age. A loving father. A loving husband. A wonderful, funny and kind man.
I couldn't be sadder if he was a member of my family. In fact, he felt like one.
Today's thankful Thursday post is dedicated to Jerry Davidoff. I can't believe I won't be seeing him again. God speed.
