Thankful Thursday, 12/1/11 In Memory of a Good Man

I found out yesterday that my eye doctor passed away.  Some might not get close to their eye doctor, but I see him more than a few times a year because my entire family goes there.  I've been going to this wonderful man about as long as I've been married, which is 27 years.

He wasn't a big man, in fact, he was quite short.  He loomed large because he was a very kind, funny and compassionate man.  We shared a lot of the same ideals as far as politics go and I've never left his office in a bad mood.  I am hearing impaired and he was a mumbler so you'd think it wouldn't have been a match made in heaven, but as patient and doctors go, it worked.  Even his receptionist is funny and I always laughed and enjoyed my visits there.

When my now 15 year old was 1, he was diagnosed with amblyopia,  It turned out to be misdiagnosed but I went straight from the pediatric eye doctors to my doctor in tears.   Because Max was dilated already, my doctor took us right in.  He's been an advocate for me through all that Max has been through and a sounding board.

Both my boys, Mike 22 and Max 15, found him to be a funny and kind man and they regularly verbally sparred with him and they too, never left his office without a smile on their faces.

He was diagnosed with lung cancer not very long ago.  I'm not sure how old he was but I know he wasn't 60 yet.  He was somewhere around my age.  A loving father.  A loving husband.  A wonderful, funny and kind man.

I couldn't be sadder if he was a member of my family.  In fact, he felt like one.

Photo compliments of Jerry's websiteToday's thankful Thursday post is dedicated to Jerry Davidoff.  I can't believe I won't be seeing him again.  God speed.

60 is just too young!  I feel your pain.  We lost a very close family member (only 30 years old) over the summer.  It changes you!  Remember to smell the roses!

Susan,

If someone can say that much about their eye doctor, he must have been a wonderful human being to make that kind of impression on you.

Susan, Jerry sounded very professional and a kind soul, and I always love those sounding board people you find in life. I loved the mumbler-hearing impaired angle you brought up. Is not it weird in life the things you don't up front think will work out end up as pleasant surprises? I am sorry for his younger age passing and am thinking of you today because of him. I am sure he got much from you and your sons too.

Thank you all.   This has hit us all hard.  Such a nice man.  So unbelievable that we can be here today and gone tomorrow.  It's very sobering.  We can't waste any time being petty and mean.  Thank you so much.

Russell, it's amazing how people who's lives intersect with ours affect us.  This is a good man, gone too soon.

Susan, what a great tribute to a kind and funny man.  And, I understand how this can impact you...I have lost a few friends and relatives over the past couple of months, and, it's not easy.

As you said, God Speed to Jerry.  And, thanks to you, dear one.

Susan-such a loss, but what a wonderful thing, to be thought of so affectionately and so solidly. I'm sure he had this impact on a lot of his patients, but how many could/would take it to this step? YOU ARE SO RIGHT-there is no time to waste being mean or petty.
