Pedestrian tales from the middle of the road, #3

Yet another pedestrian in the street meets his untimely, yet predictable end.  Streets are for cars, sidewalks are for pedestrians.

Dear Santa,

This Christmas, I'd like you to pack some knowledge and wisdom in your sleigh- and drop if off at the homes of Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney and Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings.

Better enforcement of our pedestrian traffic laws saves lives- and these two gentlemen seem to have forgotten that.

Sincerely,

Orlando

Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run on Semoran
One dead in crash on Semoran Boulevard near Old Cheney Highway; troopers seek black Jeep.
Jeff Weiner, Orlando Sentinel
December 14, 2011

Florida Highway Patrol troopers are seeking the public's help in finding a sport utility vehicle that struck a pedestrian in a fatal hit-and-run crash in Orange County on Wednesday.

Troopers say the adult male pedestrian, whose name has not yet been released, was crossing Semoran east-to-west when he stepped into the path of a black Jeep Wrangler.

After the Wrangler struck the man, troopers say, its driver immediately fled. The soft-top SUV has a loud muffler, according to crash investigators, and has damage to its front.

The hit-and-run happened near the intersection of Old Cheney Highway in east Orange County, troopers said, but the pedestrian was not inside the crosswalk when he was struck.

The pedestrian was taken to Florida Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Charges are pending in the crash, which remains under investigation. Anyone with information can call the Florida Highway Patrol at 407-737-2213 or Crimeline at 407-423-8477.

The laws need to be enforced on both sides.  The driver and the Pedestrian.

I see people 'J' walking all the time and then they want to blame the drivers.  The Pedestrian needs a ticket and a law suit!

Hi, William:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  I couldn't agree more.  As of our local news a bit ago, the driver in this case still hasn't been located.  I hope and pray they surface soon- and I'll hope they later get convicted of the felony charge for leaving the scene of the accident that involved this death.

Hard to believe, but Orlando is sitting at 25 murders for this year- there's a really good chance that the number of jaywalkers killed will exceed the number of murders...unbelievable.

Sad story for sure.  Most of the pedestrians I see are jaywalking.  Doesn't help that the pedestrian and the driver are both distracted by some dumb cell phone.  Not sure how the police can help protect people from their own dumbness.

Hi, Rob:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  We surely can't legislate morality.  And no, the "police can't be everywhere".  And jaywalking in and of itself is trumped by a burglary in progress and a number of other crimes.

But neither the Orlando Police Department, the Orange County Sheriff's Office nor the Seminole County Sheriff's Office can tell me that jaywalking doesn't exist.  They can't tell me it's legal, either- else the celebrated "Occupy Orlando" guy wouldn't have gotten a ticket for it.

So...law enforcement folks have the "how to" when address jaywalkers.  Now, they just need to get themselves a little bit of "want to".

Wouldn't saving just one life be worth it?
