Today, in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, on Choctawhatchee Bay, hundreds, perhaps thousands of fish were dead along the shoreline.  I saw alewives (menhaden), pin fish, eels, small mackerel, and catfish washed up against rip-rap, or floating as the tide came in.  There was a comment, or an article from the media, saying the 'red tide' was the result of chemicals in the water that arrived via the Mississippi River.  Unless something has changed, the Mississippi River has alway dumped into the Gulf of Mexico and moved to the west, destroying nature on the Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas shorelines.  The water along those coastlines are very dark from pollution.  Along the Florida coast, east of the Mississippi, the water has always been clear. It is still clear today, however, there is a burning, acidic presence in the air.

So, I ask, does anyone know what might be the real cause of the fish dieing in Choctawhatchee Bay?

I before was under the impression that red tide is only in the Gulf, but a month or so ago we had it here in Daytona Beach. I have lived on the East Coast since 1996 and never heard of red tide in the Atlantic before.

What is happening. Does it always come to you from the north. Again I am wrong as I thought that it was coming from the south.

I think it's coming from the East. Tim Deegan, our local weatherman in the Jacksonville area, says that Red Tide is the result of iron blowing in the wind from the Sahara. Here is the story from NASA.

Robert, I was in Sarasota Long Boat Key for a nice weekend and when we arrived they had the red tide. No Fun.  I was alway under the impression it was a bacteria but noone knows where it starts.  I could be wrong

Carole, apparantly you do not receive the east wind from the Sahara Desert.  It seems this may be the cause of the Red Tide....  Lucky you!

Jon, sorry you received Red Tide at Daytona Beach.  Not a pleasant event...

Thanks, Deborah, for the research and the comments.  You must be correct.

Mathew, I understand your opinion.  We were concerned that there might have been some kind of chemical spill.  The intracoastal waterway is populated with barges transporting who-knows-what, and military bases are all around.  I prefer to believe it's iron dust from the Sahara, as reported by Deborah.

Candy, I think Deborah has given us the answer to the Red Tide question.  I hope she is right.
