A Grateful Heart is a Happy Heart
If this was your last day on earth would you feel like you lived a fulfilling and meaningful life? Have you thought about the legacy you want to leave; what mark you made on the world and how you will be remembered?
At one point in my life I had to choose between having healthcare or putting oil in my tank for heat. I swore if I ever had life’s basic necessities I would never complain again.
Life did get better, a whole lot better, and I never forgot what it was like being afraid every day if I was going to make the rent. That experience (for which I am now grateful for) changed my thinking and gave me a whole new appreciation for life, nature, new experiences, challenges and quality time with my loved ones.
There’s not much I take for granted and when I get jammed up over something, I write a gratitude list. These days, if you have your health, food on the table, a job, a roof over your head and healthcare, you should count your blessings. Almost any other “problem” is of the high class variety.
As we acquire more “things”, make more money we tend to raise the bar. Big mistake. When you keep your expectations realistic anything above having the basic necessities is gravy. There are millions of Americans who don’t. We can get so caught up in keeping up with the Jones', we lose all perspective and don’t see the beauty all around us.
When was the last time you watched a beautiful sunset, laughed so hard your face hurt, took a walk in the woods, played with your dog, looked at the stars or called a loved one just to say hi? These intangible gifts are yours for the taking and they are free!
Sometimes taking a step back and reviewing your life is the key to moving forward with a grateful heart.
Happiness is a perspective, it’s a choice on how you decide to view the world. Today I choose to count my blessings and live with a grateful heart.
