Flooring trends for cold rooms | Westchester NY

By
Home Builder with The Flooring Girl

The topic of cold rooms and cold floors comes up most often in winter months, and also when talking about basements.  Every floor and room is different pending on how the room is used, how the floor is heated, whether wradiant heated floors westchester NYater/moisture is an issue, whether the floor is level and smooth, as well as budget, but here are a few trends and solutions I'm seeing:

1.  Radiant heated flooring/heated floors - Radiant heat flooring is the hot trend and provides luxurious comfort to your feet.  While radiant heat flooring is most popular under tile, it can also work with some hardwoods, cork, laminate and now even under carpeting.

cork flooring westchester NY2.  Cork flooring - Cork flooring is environmentally friendly and has a soft and warm feel.  And, due to the air pockets in cork, it provides some added insulation for a double win.

insulation boards for basement warmup flooring westchester NY3.  Foam board insulation underneath the flooring - These 1/4" boards provide an extra layer of protection and have much higher "r" values vs. a cork underlayment.  They can be used in isolation or in conjunction with radiant heat flooring.  When they are used with radiant heat flooring, the floors heat up much faster and reduce energy bills.

4.  Carpeting or area rugs - Nothing beats the comfort and warm of carpet on your feet.  Even when you have a hard surface, area rugs can give the room some more warmth - both temperature wise and visually.

Debbie: Very timely post that covers the basics on cold room flooring trends. With winter here I bet those that made changes this year are really reaping the rewards of warmer floors.

Good morning, Debbie. I seldom watch the boob tube, but the other day I watched an episode on DIY that showed how to install radiant heat which incorporated cork tiles. Really cool stuff...

Debbie, love radiant flooring which i had installed in my master bath...it is great this time of year..all being said carpeting is a far cheaper alternative for rooms but the choices are all out there as you so wisely share.

Ginny - Yes, radiant heated floors are amazing.  And, for sure carpet is way less expensive.  This is where budget comes into play - both short term and long term, as you often will get different answers pending on your outlook and length of time you'll plan to stay in the home.

Interesting concept for a blog Debbie.  I wonder how many people think to add heat to the floor of a cold room!

I would absolutely love to have radiant heating - nothing beats toasty toes!  Great timing for this information; anyone who is sick of the cold mornings might jump on the radiant train.

Roger - Thc, me too

Jay - LOL, not sure.  There are many ways to make things warmer...including insulation in walls, too, I suppose.

Kat - Yes, me too.  I'm sick of it.  I wish I had it

Valerie - I know..no comparison.

Hi Deb, great post.  Can foam board be used underneath cork, for extra insulation and warmth?

Debbie,

When I first read this, I thought you meant COLD Rooms, not rooms with a low temperature.

Still good advice.

Debbie,  It’s an interesting concept for me …heating the floor!  I love my new hardwood floors.  One thing I did not consider before installing is the amount of dust that shows on darker wood and the office has a hallow sound.  I think I may need to use an area rug but I do not want to cover the beautiful floor.

Brian - LOL, that is so funny.

Kathleen - Oh, yes, dark floors show dust and scratches more.  If you have a hollow sound, it's prob. because you have a floating floor.  Maybe it's on top of cement.  Area rugs will help...just don't cover too much.
