Who's On First!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with eXp Realty LLC NM Broker License 16161

Do you ever have a day of conversations resembling the “Who’s on First” dialogue made famous by Bud Abbott and Lou Costello? Mine today was all about “Who’s On First, What’s On Second, and I Don’t Know on third. Instead of baseball, I was working to keep the buyer and seller at the plate from the real estate dugout. Here is what happened and why I did not have clue about what was going on!

Imagine you represent a buyer. OK, good. We know who is on first. You and your buyer. Now jump to the moment when they tell you the property you found for them is the right one. Great, now we know what’s on second is a home. And then you call the seller’s agent to learn the details needed to prepare an offer to purchase. You ask, what is the fellow’s name. Then, all of sudden you are back to who’s on first. This time with the listing agent. Now just imagine everything is moving quickly. The offer is written and submitted and now you are in the 9th inning with another counter in play. Our buyer is in the stands.

Then, wham! You are back on who’s on first with the listing agent. The agent all of sudden tells you I don’t know is on third. You look and see I don’t know on third. It turns out the seller was not exactly the owner of the home after all. Like life, real estate happens. When you feel like you do not know what is going on, it helps everyone to remember Who’s on First” and jump back in the game again.

Emily -- great tie-in to the classics.  I might have to get our CD of that out and watch it again now.

Who's on first sometimes ties into the other saying. Anybody got a football?

Emily very clever, but I am sure that unlike the Abbott and Costello skit, there was nothing funny about this.  Amazing that someone would try to sell a property that they don't own.

Rob, a football? That's a new twist!

George, remember when there is a willing buyer... anything can happen. Look at the properties on Craigslist advertised with ads for rent lifted by con artists using our listings. The net is making the real estate look like the wild west every day. Only another reason to be represented by a competent Realtor(r).

Well, did you find out who the seller was?  And why the confusion?  Great Abbott and Costello example BTW, but they made it funny.  Somehow I don't think this was?!?

Carla, thank you for seeing the reality side. Every time we think our team years of experience has seen everything, something new happens next. We like to turn setbacks into opportunities as fast as possible. The line in the skit is "I don't know what is going on" rather than confusion. In the end, we figured it out and moved from shock to plan B.

Emily, Best of luck with Plan B.  I tried to buy a place here only to find that the legal description was wrong and the property in MLS was not the property for sale.  Lockbox on the wrong vacant home...

We have interesting experiences.

Marge, we could make movies about what happens in the dugout!

Rob, I think we have to expect anything and everything today. Real estate is on such a fast pace, people can forget, at least we hope, to let their agent know who owns the property....

Emily I like the way you approached this post.   The situation might not have been funny but to maintain sanity in a situation like this it is good to think of something humorous.

I find that when something like this happens the next property my client fall in love with is always better.

Don't you feel sometimes we should be writing a book about all our weird real estate happenings?  I don't think most people would believe it, though.  It's always something new!
