A Dirty Little Secret

Dirty little secret  -  regiftingRE-GIFTING -- A GREAT IDEA OR TACKY?

A few years ago, I was visiting my family in Oklahoma.  I was excited to see all my nieces, nephews and cousins.

We gathered for the holiday dinner and gift giving.  It was a tradition that each person opened a gift while other family members looked on -- and then another family member would open their gift... and so it went.

My Aunt Judith had a beautifully wrapped gift in front on her.

She carefully removed the ribbon and folded the paper neatly so she could reuse it again.

As she lifted the lid to the box, she let out a scream.  My first thought was that there was a live mouse in the box! It turned out to be a coffee maker with automatic everything -- radio and timer included.

The problem was two-fold:  Aunt Judith hated coffee and she had given the coffee maker to Cousin Carole as a wedding present a couple of years prior ...  Well, it turns out that Cousin Carole got 3 coffee makers and re-gifted THIS automatic coffee maker to my cousin Paula ...  who re-gifted it to Aunt Judith!

Regifting ~~  Apparently, the word can be attributed to a 1995 "Seinfeld" episode.   Although experts tell us that re-gifting has been around a long time, it is more popular than ever.  A recent survey found that nearly 60 percent of the people polled admitted they had re-gifted!

Here are some tips for re-gifting!

Don't re-gift something that has been used

Put the gift in a NEW bag or new box

Don't leave on part of the tape or old wrapping paper

Be sure to remove the gift card that came with the gift

And Don't return the same gift to the person who gave it to you in the first place!

Re-gifting makes the holidays GREEN!  (it is a good way to recycle gifts and save money)

Now come on and share your dirty little secret  ...  have you ever re-gifted?   Do you think it is okay to re-gift?

Do you have a funny re-gifting story to share?

Joan - Oh my...GREAT  idea for regifting you had re: a Senior Citizen and with the special added touches you are planning I'm betting they'll enjoy the address book and the little extras!

LOL! the bottle of wine in the same bag...now that's b-a-d

It might be fun to have a New England Professionals re-gifting after the holidays - what do you think?

I'm glad you enjoyed seeing the kittens - they're having a blast with the tree, the little munchkins!

Jackie  Once we survive the winter, I think it would be great to have a NH MA rainer get-to-gether.  Perhpas we can plan on a spring awaking party!  I brought my big bag of goodies for the seniors -- the wheels on meals organizers loved the "regifted" items -- I also through in some christmas cards and stamps --  then I went to party today and there was a yankee swap - it was clear which items were being "regifted" -- I would say some items should simply go into the garbage!

Joan, very funny!  I've re-gifted BUT never from a family member and certainly not back to another member of the family, extended or not!

Your title got me and then the story had me laughing......I think we have all regifted at one time or another. Like some other dicey things in life, I have done it on certain occasions, very carefully......

Oh.... I think we've all done it.  There is a great add on TV where someone is given a fruit cake.  It is then regifted.... from person to person.... until the original person receives it back.  You just have to be careful about who you're regifting to.

Joan, it's definitely okay to re-gift and recycle gifts that you don't want or need.  In fact, we have a whole file drawer full of gifts ready to be re-gifted at some point.  We've even got a fun tradition in our family of carefully opening the wrapping paper and reusing it the following year for the same person who gave it to us originally!

Hi Joan, I'm just catching up on my reading after a very hectic few days and this post caught my eye.

Whether we admit it or not I think most people re-gift at some point, especially if we receive gifts we already have like duplicate CDs or DVDs. I don't see any harm in it as long as it's done with taste and discretion.

Martin    I hear they make a mean fruit cake in Burlington MA.  What a riot!  I never did like those fruit cakes -- they always looks sort of petrified.  Happy holidays and thanks for sharing this very funny re-gifting story.

Brian  You wind the prize!   You have taken re-gifting to the highest level!  A file cabinet of gifts to be re-gifted!  I think that is a great idea --  I always seem to mess up on the paper -- I get so excited that I end up ripping part of it.  I am going to have to take some lessons from you.  Happy Holidays.

Marti  Thanks for checking in.  I am with you -- re-gifting with discretion is the way to go.  I know sometimes, one of the gifts I have received is just perfect for someone I know!  Hope that you have a wonderful holiday.  I am looking forward to a wonderful 2008!

You guys are saying it's ok if you regift something (and I agree with you if the gift is not for you but would be great for somebody else) but how do you feel when you get something obviously regifted? Especially if it is something totally wrong for you and from a close person? Like I got things from my best friend that I can pretty much with 99.9% accuracy say that she got from somebody else and she didn't like them. She has good taste, similar to mine, and yet she gives me something she doesn't want and I can't possibly either. While I spent quite an amount of time and money for her gift... And she shipped that crap across the ocean! I usually get really great gifts from her but now when I am thinking about it, only when we give gifts from face to face. I got one crap gift once by mail from her already some time ago... What should I say to her? That I loved it???

Eve  I think you have pointed out how NOT to re-gift!  That's an awful experience.  I hope your friend stops sending you things you don't like or need!

Michael  I think this is a great topic!  I think the rain god definately have their favorites -- several of my ideas have been stolen and featured!    After I posted this, there was a cover story on re-gifting in our local newspaper!  I hope that all the gifts you received are just waht you were looking for.  Thanks for commenting.  Happy New Year!
