Taxes and Portability and Exemptions, Oh My!!
It’s that time of the year again, time to follow the Yellowbrick Road to the Palm Beach County Property Appraisers office or file for your tax exemptions online. March 1st, marks the deadline to file for Homestead Exemptions so the time is NOW to get those forms and applications filled out. Many of us are already drowning in a sea of paperwork this time of year, if only it were as easy as clicking our heels three times to have our forms filled and filed!
The Palm Beach County Property Appraiser’s Office administers all property tax exemptions and they’ve made the process of filing for Homestead Exemptions as painless as possible by offering printable forms and instructions online as well as E-File options.
The quickest way to file is on-line. Just click on this link and follow the instructions to get your exemptions Exemption E-File. You are going to need your Florida Driver’s License or Florida ID and if you have a vehicle, you need the vehicle registration information. If you are a registered voter, you will need your voter registration number. You will also need a copy of your deed so you provide the Palm Beach County Official Records Book number and Official Records Page number. If you don’t have the actual recorded deed, it is easy to find it on-line following the instructions and links at the Property Appraiser’s website. Collect your documents, then request a PIN following the instructions and proceeds with the steps outlined at the website.
If you prefer to fill out the form and mail it in, you can download the Palm Beach County Homestead Exemption Form and Instructions and fill out the form on-line or simply print the form and fill it out by hand. The State of Florida requires this documentation to verify that you are truly a Florida resident. Each applicant must provide the needed documentation to get the exemption. Once you have the form completed and have copies of the required documents for each applicant, you can mail the form to:

If you sold a home that previously had a Homestead Exemption, your can transfer a significant portion of your “Save Our Homes” benefit to the new property. Many people don’t know that there are other exemptions you can file for including special tax breaks for Senior Citizens who meet certain income limits,members of the U.S. Military forces who are on active duty, disabled Veterans, widows and widowers and individuals who are disabled. There’s even a special exemption call “GRANNY FLAT” for residents who build an addition on their home for their parents or grandparents.
