Last month my 8 year old son Parker told us he was struggling with his math work. He said other kids in the classroom seem to finish their work earlier and he didn’t know why it was so much harder for him. We called his teacher and she recommended he come in for some tutoring.
This weekend while preparing to head out to my softball practice Parker said he wanted to come with me. I could see from his facial expression that he didn’t just want to watch me play either. There was something on his mind. As soon as I started the car Parker’s face lit up. His words: “Dad, tutoring totally rocks. I love it. I told some of my friends and they’re coming to tutoring now too. I’m smarter at Math than I thought, its fun!” For 10 minutes and with great animation he explained why he thinks he was struggling in math and how he just needed the teacher to show him another way to do the work.
I couldn’t help but think about that experience the rest of the weekend. Do I take in pride in learning? Do I recognize and ask for help when I need it? What about my clients? Real Estate is hard enough on your own. Do realtors reach out and ask for help when they need it? What is stopping you from learning those skills that will take your business to the next level?
I hope this year that we can each recognize areas where we can use a little extra help. Whether it’s with sales skills, business planning, marketing programs, etc. Once we do we need seek out help from the experts. In so doing, I know we will find the same excitement from learning that a child can.
