Global warmingDo you care now?  Do you care about your children's well-being? What about your children's children? Well, as American's, many of us think about now.....us....me.....and now.

Sure, many of us think about our families. About God and or religion. About work and and our image. But what about the future of the only human existence known to man, as records can show for now. Does anyone realize that as quickly as 100 years from now, that the earth as we know it, could lose a continent. It's called Global warming. The problem with this is that there are so many factors relating to global warming and the earth becoming extinct. And this is not a scare tactic, just scientific studies proving that this can happen if we don't do something about it. What does this have to do with you and I in the real estate industry?  Unless we all have boats that have solar panels and can grow our food on these boats, you won't have to worry about selling houses in the future. Define future....  sometime after tomorrow, but not happening that quickly.

What is global warming?
Global warming is the rise in temperature of the earth's atmosphere. -- It's said that by the time a baby born today is 80 years old, the world will be 6 and a half degrees warmer than it is now. David A. King, Chief Scientific Advisor to the British Government said, "In my view, climate change is the most severe problem that we are facing today -- more serious even than the threat of terrorism."

global warming

Due to rapid climate change, Global warming is real and it is accelerating across the globe. As the effects of this change combine with overpopulation and weather crises, climate disruptions will affect more people than does war.

It becomes a cycle and what starts this cycle is Carbon Dioxide. From Wikipedia, Carbon dioxide is a chemical compound composed of one carbon and two oxygen atoms. It is often referred to by its formula CO2. It is present in the Earth's atmosphere at a low concentration and acts as a greenhouse gas. In its solid state, it is called dry ice. It is a major component of the carbon cycle.

Wikipedia also defines Greenhouse gases (GHGs) as gaseous components of the atmosphere that contribute to the greenhouse effect. Some greenhouse gases occur naturally in the atmosphere, while others result from human activities. Naturally occurring greenhouse gases include water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone. Certain human activities, however, add to the levels of most of these naturally occurring gases.

What does all of this mean still? It means that during this cycle, creating more heat, it will effect the polar areas. These are places that we have major Glaciers and IcefieldsGlaciers are rivers of ice that move very slowly. They can take a year to move as far as you can walk in a few minutes. When a piece of a glacier breaks off and floats in the water, it's called an iceberg. But here lies the problem. As the temperature rises, these glaciers and icebergs melt and sometimes creating more water than we could handle. That is just part of the problem. You also start to lose animal life. First goes the polar bears and ceratin migrating birds. Then the cycle starts for the worse. Here is where you, as a concerned person, needs to truly think about this and possibly do something about it. Why is this not discussed more often than it should. There are scientists paid by certain parts of the government to deny that this is a severe problem. This has been known to happen in many areas of our lives, someone always countering a professional opinion and even a scientist's study.  Many contribute it to it being just that, science, not fact. Fact? Fact is that there are patterns, which can be the proof needed. It's talked about in here: 'There is no proof that CO2 is causing global warming'

Don't believe some of these commonly heard statements found here: See Actions page

  •   It isn't really happening  (documented science overwhelmingly shows temperatures   rising rapidly)
  •   It's natural   (temperature increases, especially since the 1970's, are far above natural variations)
  •   It does not affect the U.S.  (the U.S. is experiencing rising sea levels, more severe storms and droughts, die-off of forests, altered animal migrations, and loss of glaciers such as those in Glacier National Park)
  •   Technology will solve the problem for us   (Massive "fixes" like burying greenhouse gases are very unlikely, but many smaller changes can make a difference AND are available now)

Very Important Things to Do about Global Warming...from the individual to the national: See Actions page

  •   Learn about it -- start with many web sites listed below.
  •   We all know about cars and such. But use efficient appliances, replace light bulbs with low-voltage compact fluorescents, check your home insulation. Buy renewable energy, like wind and solar, from your power company.
  •   Shop smart: Look for products made from recycled materials, created with renewable energy, and which help you save money and reduce pollution.
  •   Use your vote and influence as a citizen to elect responsive leaders; help them organize the neighborhood and town for energy efficiency.
  •   Suburban sprawl makes for lots of global warming pollution; plan for walkable communities, lots of trees, open spaces, and public transportation in and between cities.

Definitely appreciate your sharing.  Its a huge concern.  We must act in this country - and our actions must serve as a role model for other countries (ie China, India).  It truly is a global problem - we must lead the way!

I am one in the camp that says global warming might be a red herring...I mean, we've only been able to track weather patterns for a relatively short period in the history of the world, so this may be part of a cyclical trend.  Of course, Al Gore DID invent the internet, so he's probably dead on. ;)

Kaushik....   thanks for stopping by and for your concerns and input. My main thing here was awareness and not saying that everything points to this. But after much research, a lot of the facts point to all of this and makes sense.

Leigh....  please read the comment that I made to Kaushik. I have been watching a lot of the history and discovery channels in the last 2 years. One thing that is interesting. Even though their research started x,y,z years ago, the data goes back hundreds of years. And there are patterns and proof.

I forget what it was about, but scientists and explorers were able to send some type of drill down into the earth and actually did a large soil sample in some type of clear tube. When pulling this up, they could determine different patterns because of the repeat colors of the soil and rock. Again, it's vague, from what I remember, but just different ways to determine what happened in the past and what can happen in the future.

Here is a good example. Just this year alone. Look at the hurricane season. It was down a little more than normal and could have been disastrous if it weren't for the high pressure that sat off the Atlantic Ocean. How the weather in some areas were seasonably warmer than normal.

Anyhow.... I do appreciate your opinion and this was not directed towards you. I understand that we don't always have enough history to go off of. One thing that would make other think otherwise would be for the fact that we don't hear much about this. One reason, this is not glorified news. And the media in reality is sometimes controlled, even though we don't want to admit to this.

Thanks for your input. This just made me think more, hence the reason for the long comment.  thanks.

I'm pretty much in line with Leigh also.  HOWEVER, that certainly doesn't mean we are right and I support the entire world's scientific community to continue to study and make recomendations.

Regarding what we can do now (or should do)..... whether it be a global warming issue or not, we as a PLANET must address the energy issues and solar and wind are the obvious directions to look.  Unfortunatly, 1/2 of the people in the US don't vote....and of the one's that do....the environment is typically #5 or lower on their list of issues (Probably because we are short term versus long term thinkers - in general).

I tend to be cynical when I see the the 'environmentalists' using a gas powered lawn mower , which pollutes much more than an automobile.  Heck, the wasted energy of holiday decorations could be debated (yes, low wattage -  but a bizillion of them.)

Rob.... thanks for the input. I always appreciate your comments. But I tell you what, after watching a few history channel's shows on this and reading a lot of this while doing my research, I am slightly hoping the fence.

Part of the reason why we don't take this as seriously, is because it can be a lot of work. Do you remember when your town started their recycle bins for residential. And then some said.... you must separate your cans and bottles from your normal trash or you will be fined. Well.... people don't like to be told what to do. I am sometimes one of them. I admit this. And by trying to correct what has been down and taking place, again, I will admit, I am one of those that said....ah, I won't be around when it happens. Great attitude... but what about my sisters kids... or their kids?

It's not about us now...but the future of this plant. And trust me...anyone reading this. I am not going off on some wild "save the planet" march...  this was more for awareness. But as stated, this is a bigger problem than many of you think. And it's not just a bunch of scientists taking guesses. The proof is in the pudding. Just look around at the climate changes in your area.  You can see patterns that have changed from 10 to 15 years ago. Just my thoughts and opinions.

Chris....  so, when are you heading to the hills?  lol  Hey... it's funny, but sad. Especially when someone as Al Gore states this... and if you happen to be a hater of Mr. Gore... you laugh and turn your head. But is he on to something?  Does he see these reports and studies?

As I stated before... there is proof that the US and other countries actually have people step up to say that this is not a problem. Just like in court....you will always find an expert to testify for either side, right or wrong. They can say and use opinion and the word probable...

Jeff,

Enviornmentalists have been on this for years.  The real threat, in my opinion, will be from China --- their population is just so massive and they are emerging as the global consumer.  If we all do 'little things' --- recycle, reuse and most importantly, consume less!  Whether that's in our cars, our homes, our offices --- every little bit will help this cause; you are right, this IS a problem.  Thanks for posting to shed some light on the subject.

If you look at back at the eons and eons in the development of this planet you'll find that we've had Ice Ages and Heat Ages. The core drilling showed that temperature changes affected the earth. Well, yeah.

The Age of the Dinosaurs, which was pretty warm, ended, when a huge meteor hit the earth causing drastic cooling and decreased sunlight for many years. Could the Age of Man be changed by something extra terrestrial? Yeah. Definitely.

However, we still need to be conscious of how we treat the earth and its inhabitants. We believe in recycling. We try to re-use items (like all our Christmas wrappings...see save bows and boxes!). We shovel and don't use a snow blower. I mulch and don't use chemicals on the lawn. I've also bought and use low energy light bulbs.

Now, these are things that everybody can do...and every bit will help. But, the over riding question: Is the temperature change just part of the normal changes that our planet goes thru...or is it evidence of bigger problems? We'll probably never know. Our children and their children might know.

Joanne.... thanks for stopping by. And thanks for that great input in regards to China... Something that I failed to mentioned where some of these other countries, especially China. But I didn't want to make my post too long and bore people. This is not a funny story, but is more serious than what many may think or want to think.

Overall, it does come down to the little things. But even that in itself, many of us just don't have time for the little things. It's called the "me" syndrome, and no...not the meme syndrome... lol  Thanks for sharing.

Eileen....... wow... thanks for some great insight and for your input.

I agree.... anything can happen that would be out of our control, aka, meteors and such. But part of what is going on is something that we can control. Sure, climate control, we can't....it will happen. But because of the carbon dioxide and such, this is from most of us, which we can control. And it does affect the earth's atmosphere. And sure, we have known about this for eons.....  people just don't listen. And as you pointed out.... we have a very good idea that we won't see this or the end results...but as we both have mentioned, will our children's children?????

Great post-

The biggest problem is: I, me, my, mine - everyone else, too bad!

It's disgusting, but it's true.

Yes, there have been cyclical, natural changes to the average temperatures - and it's not going to stop.

BUT- that doesn't mean we should ignore the fact that we are actively making things worse.

There are things that everyone can do every day to help the environment.  Most people just don't do it because they're stupid and/or lazy.  BTW, if that offends anyone, you're part of the problem.

A neighbor of mine laughed the other day because he saw me bringing several different bags to the garbage area in our condo.  You know, plastic in one, aluminum in another - for recycling.  He said that it wasn't worth the extra effort.  The containers are right next to each other, you twit!

Don't even get me started on the geniuses that are still driving huge, low milage SUV's.

We need to spend much more time on alternative energy sources - wind, solar (like Jeff mentioned), hydro and nuclear.

If you want to read an interesting article on developments in environment-friendly homes, check out the January 2007 issue of Wired.

Marc.... thanks for the laugh and your input. You had me laughing when you mentioned the word twit.... lol  All your points are valid. And I am sure there are valid points on the other side of the fence... but show them to me. Tell me them. I am willing to listen.  I see proof, not opinion.

And Marc, I would love to get you started....  ;o)  It makes for a great discussion. I knew this would be some what of a boring blog... not a funny story.....  but it does relate to you and I...  and to real estate, but so much more than that.  Thanks again for your input and humor.

Very controversial subject Jeff...KUDOS for addressing it!

As joann says:  China is a factor in this!  Just becoming aware of what China is doing to our economy and our world will help.  I personally started to boycott the Chinese product in favor of a Made in Anywhere-Else-But-China product.  The effect from their growth is not only on our environment but on our manufacturing sector, raw supplies and our energy prices.

If anything, the doubting-Thomases will start to conserve energy with rising prices.

I would like to promote my "Boycott China" agenda here.  It really isn't that much more expensive to buy a made in USA product when you look at the grand scheme of what has happened because of our immense desire for inexpensive (and sorry, but CHEAP) goods.

Renee... first off, thanks for the compliment. And sorry, but I thought this would have been featured...  you wonder. Yes, I said it.... shoot me.  lol  And I did mention real estate.... lol

But in regards  to your comments... they are right on...both from an environmental viewpoint and economical viewpoint. Some good thoughts.

And you can promote anything in here that is related to this topic. Even if I felt different about it. It opens discussion. Basically, freedom of speech...again, as long as it pertains to this topic, for the most part.

I have a client who just returned from a business trip to China, she was in Shanghai and Beijing, and she said the smog is SO thick, it literally clings to your skin and clothes.  So much coal is burned in China, and they as a country think they're above doing anything about it.  The US panders to Chinese demands and they go ahead on acting like spoiled brats if they are asked to do anything that might -gasp- promote the greater good.

I am SOOO sick of seeing 'made in China' on every freaking thing I buy.  i'm with Renee!

but back to the topic at hand-we should all definitely pitch in where we can, but as the devil's advocate, there are studies that show recycling is doing a heck of a lot of damage to the environment since the techniques are as updated as they probably should be.  we're, as a society, so busy making plasma and HDTVs and TiVO and GPS but we're not very proactive in alternative energy sources or super-mileage cars (which you know and I know can be made but the lobbyists are keeping them down).  i'll quit now.  my conservative ire is getting up. =)

Leigh... thanks for coming back and making light of this and the situation... and more feedback and input.

When I did my research, I didn't look into China.. both you, Renee, and Joanne brought China up. And this is a great discussion. Leigh...  I didn't know smog was that bad. Besides... you make an awesome point.  We, the United States of America, really don't do anything about it. We care about trade, money, politics...etc etc. One main problem is that we have many American made companies over in China, making these products, to save them money. In my opinion, they are just as bad as illegal immigrants, who don't pay taxes. WOW>.. now you have me really thinking.

Overall... we vote, but as someone said... this is not at the top of the voting charts. The big topic of discussion....  it's abortion.... illegal marriages....  religious stuff....  and then anything else. Unfortunately, the media....  what is bigger and better news.

One thing I have learned... WE THE PEOPLE ..we are the ones that need to stand up then and make others aware of this. You talk about recycling and how that still hurts us because of the process. I honestly don't know anything about that aspect of it, so I will trust you judgment on it.

And getting back to what you and Renee said,..... about buying Chinese products?  I would agree with you, but I will admit, I am at fault for this, because I don't pay attention to the tags always... and just buy what I want.  ;o(

Leigh...again, thanks for stirring the pot in the right direction.

Leigh:  along the recycling lines remember the controversy with paper vs plastic.  Hmmm isn't plastic made with OIL?  I would rather go for something made from a renewable resource rather than oil.

I say do our part:  conserve when you can, try to go out of your way to do it and quit buying from China.  It will help our economy, our energy prices and save the world all in one.

:slapping Jeff silly:  Now you will pay attention, huh?  Just kidding, ok maybe not :)

You forgot about the media's obsession with mortgage fraud, foreclosures and "da bubble"

I think they (the media) should focus on this.  We need to strangle China because we made it what it is today.  Ask real estate agents in the manufacturing belt what effect China has had on their market.  Oh yes, and we cannot smoke a Cuban cigar legally in this country because of less reasons.

Things that make you go HMMMMMMMMMMM

heavens, i shouldn't even respond again because i need to go to bed. =)  but i can't resist a comment directed at what you said, Jeff, about the 'issues' that are tops on the platforms nowadays.  We don't talk about things that might change our comfortable way of life, we talk about issues like abortion that should be BETWEEN A WOMAN AND HER DOCTOR and not a bunch of freaking ancient politicians in Washington.  I'm a pro-choice conservative-how in the world do i even fit in? =)

Renee... hey now.... does your husband know about this? lol  You lost me on the 2nd sentence, mortgage fraud?  were you just trying to make a point?

Strangle China?  If you meant to say, cut them off... yes, I agree...  it's all too political. They need us and we kind of need them. But when we have a plane that goes down, they go berserk and scream bloody spying... LOL   It's bad, hence the reason why were are where we are. Meaning... we are not United...the United Nations?  hogwash.....  why don't they get involved in this also?  I guess that is one reason why so many don't care, because the big boys don't seem to care. And we get negative saying, how can I change anything then?

hhhmmmmm things that go bump in the night... lol

And Renee.... I am paying attention. Both my hands are flat on the table and I am sitting straight up in my chair with both feet planted firm on the ground... legs not crossed and I am not chewing gum. Otay?

LOL... Leigh....sorry...  but at least we are on the same page. I like that. That is a huge problem. The platforms are all backwards.  I agree...pro choice or not..  You are right, it should be between her and her doctor. Too many people bring religion into this. My whole point... if we don't pay attention to the really important issues on hand, there won't be religions...people...land....  etc etc.

Leigh... thanks for pointing this out.

Why are people in such denial about this concept?  Why as human beings do we always deny these things until it is too late?  I live in the Northeast and can tell you that it has been 50 degrees all December which is above normal for this time of year.  And not just for one day but the whole month.  It has NOT snowed here yet.

Rent an Inconvenient Truth.  Even if you only believe 10% of it it is scary.  And why is the message not taking seriously...because of the person delivering it?????  How many times in human history has a message been ignored because of the deliverer?  Do you think he computer generated the pictures of the glaciers melting?  To what end?  What would be the purpose of perpetuating this on us?

The Earths population took 2000 years to reach 2 billion and has skyrocketed to 6 billion in a short 50 years.  It is expected to reach 9 billion very quickly.  How can you not believe this is putting a strain on our environment?  As far as who is to blame the US is responsible for over 30% of the worlds CO2 emissions.  China is actually at the forefront for developing ways to reduce CO2 emissions.  Their cars are ridiculously more efficient than ours. I admit, I drive an american car.  But my next car wont be.   And do you think coal puts out more than oil?  Dont be naive.  Lets stop blaming others and start doing what WE can to help with the problem.

Visit this link to see what you can do at home and on the road to lower CO2 emissions:

I would like to know if everyone who commented has seen the movie.  I also curious what global warming has to do with buying from China and our economy.  They are two totally seperate issues.  if we stop buying from China tomorrow it will not stop the global warming problem.  And lets also remember alot of Made in China products are actually sold by american companies.

Colleen..... thanks for that.... but no compliment?  ;o(  But I'll take what I can get......  ;o)

Jamie....  thanks for stopping by and giving such a passionate comment. I want to say one thing first... sure, the China comment about buying China products and what does it have to do with this blog....was off subject. But this happens sometimes in blogs and comments. But it wasn't totally out there. Just defining China overall.

In any case... you bring up a great example of what I was talking about in regards to temperature and such. This should be a concern. But it's still not talked about. If you look at weather and the climate in the last decade...in the last 2 years now..... it's totally out of character... not following typical patterns....  hurricanes were down this year?  Not heard of.

Overall.... you made some great points. Thanks for sharing.

Jeff-

This is a subject that gets me kind of riled up!  What I meant but didnt come across well with I guess is let's deal with the global warming issue and what we do here to contribute to it.  We cannot control others but it is human nature to point the finger away from ourselves and wait for the other guy to change first.

Our economical troubles wont mean anything in 10 or 20 years if the glaciers melt and ALL of countries lose due to the sea level rising 20 feet.  Global warming is just that a global issue and cannot be blamed on any one country, that was supposed to be my point. :)

Oh yah and some folks here think it is just great that we havent had any snow yet.  I tell them that they must be insane and do they have any idea what it is a sign of?  Guess I am glad I am not in Denver though.:)

Ok... I am getting tired early tonight, so I will admit that I did not read all the comments.  Do I agree that global warming is happening?  All I can say is that each year these Florida summers seem to be getting hotter and hotter, but it could just be me getting thicker in the waste and being a little more insulated.  Honestly, I do not know.  I am skeptical of both ends.

What is really important is along the lines of what Marc said... we all need to do our part to keep the world from getting any dirtier.  We need to find and utualize clean engery.  We need to recycle.  We need to be more efficient with the energy we do have (turn lights off whe you leave the room.)  There is so much that we can do, that we don't do.  As a society in whole, we have become lazy and have taken things for granted.  Will our future pay for our mistakes?  Are we not paying for our forefathers mistakes?  It is history.  And if we do not learn from it, it will repeat itself.  We need to step up to the plate and start with ourselves on fixing this problem.  Then we can move on to the neighbors, and spread from there.

Hope this made sense... the pillows are calling and I still have real work to do. :)

Jeff:

The science behind global warming in wholly inconclusive.  As such, I'll reserve any comments.

Now...as for China?  Our dependence on cheap, knock-off, consumer electronics makes it impossible to boycott the Red Dragon.  I think it's irresponsible that we continue to promote continued trade with an enemy nation that kills its children in the the name of population control, restricts freedom of religious freedom and thought, practices open trademark and patent violations, and deliberately pollutes our planet.  I'm not for a boycott of products, Renee...I'm for unilateral restraint of trade with that rogue nation.  But keep in mind that I am a member of the VRWC.

I live in coastal Huntington Beach, my office is in Long Beach.  Every day I have the privilege of the most beautiful drive along the coast and through our gorgeous but disappearing wetlands.

The route takes me along Pacific Coast Highway through the lovely beach communities of Sunset Beach and Seal Beach.

Sunset Beach to the left (Ocean side) is 2 tiny short blocks, with multi-million dollar homes sitting on the sand.  The other side of PCH is strewn with the canals of Huntington Beach, and has wonderful homes facing the canals on both sides.

At one point the canal curves almost up to the road with a short beach where rental kayaks are launched from.  This beach used to be about 20 feet wide and went the width of the canal, with sand stretching up to the road.

Over the last couple of years a retaining wall has been built and the beach is almost completely gone.  A small triangle of beach exists on the very corner where the kayaks are still launched from and returned to.  I suspect the triangle is built up to insure the kayak business.

When we get high tides the water level is so high it spills around the sides of the retaining wall and floods the surrounding and nearby shops and the streets of Sunset Beach, occasionally so bad PCH has to be closed and rerouted.

As I travel out of Sunset Beach there is a long stretch of wetland prior to arriving in Seal Beach.  To the left is the mouth of Huntington Harbor and the dock where the Naval ships come in to be re-armed.  To the right is grassy wetlands for as far as the eye can see.  There used to be a lot more grass, most of it is under water all of the time now.  There is more water to see than grass.  When the tides are high it is like driving down a road in the middle of the ocean, pure water on either side, at one point almost onto the road.

My point is, the ocean levels are rising, I am witnessing it, a little more each year.  Homes are going to be threatened soon and lets face it the homes here are not built to survive it like Venice, Italy.

Jeff you really researched this, very informative post.  I think with the recent Al Gore movie more people are thinking about the effect of global warming.  In the eas,t so far winter has felt like earlier spring, still no  snow.  Just last night a friend commenting on the weather said; Do you think the weather is so crazy because of global warming?

Jaime.... bring it on then... do something about it.... ;o)   Your 2nd sentence is good. We all need to pitch in, and I am not talking about the United States. thanks again...

Jason..... how was that pillow... I still want to go back to mine. In any case....  yes, we all should take some sort of action.... learn from our past mistakes.... and history does repeat itself. Maybe that is why so many of us are lazy on this issue?  "if it happens, it happens"   hhhhmmmm

Brian..... aaarrggghhhhh I was really you would have put your two cents in, instead of the scientific crap. Sure, there is a lot of science involved, but look at the visible proof also. Sure, it's happened in prior years...prior decades, then stopped.... but back now. It's called a cycle and the more this happens, the more that it extends itself beyond the previous cycle (meaning.... 10 yrs ago, the average national avg. was say.... 78 degrees...  10 yrs later, now 79 degrees...  ) these are hints and not just the earth changing or spinning in a different direction. There are studies that we are slightly moving closer towards the sun.

See....when have the technology to discover a lot of this now.... but we don't report a lot of it.. FEAR... the public knowing too much. PEOPLE.... it is happening. We should all know from the Kennedy assassination.  Cover up... the so-called truth is buried.

Brian..in regards to the buying of products from China... yes, boycott...but our gov't needs to step in because as many of us know, a lot of US business's are over there.

This is currently one of the featured articles from today on CNN...

"ORONTO, Ontario (AP) -- A giant ice shelf the size of 11,000 football fields has snapped free from Canada's Arctic, scientists said.

The mass of ice broke clear 16 months ago from the coast of Ellesmere Island, about 800 kilometers (497 miles) south of the North Pole, but no one was present to see it in Canada's remote north.

Scientists using satellite images later noticed that it became a newly formed ice island in just an hour and left a trail of icy boulders floating in its wake. (Watch the satellite images that clued in ice watchers)"  Full Article Here

Hi Jeff..  let me start this comment out by admitting I did not read all the comments above. BAD NICK, BACK NCK..   I did see something about China.. and I too am aware of buying stuff that is not made in China. But its so difficult, I do buy SONY though, it is a great product. anyway... your post is great as it heightens awareness. This one should be featured so that more people can view it on AR.

As Marc said, people look at him funny for recycling. We should make those people live in underwater homes when the oceans rise. We too recycle here at home. not everyone does, but we do our part.

One last comment that is a little off tangent, but its what I'm known for, going off tangent...  I love surfing, and the surfboard industry is a huge producer of foam for boards that are not recyclable. Its like styrofoam.. so now the largest manufacturer has shut down due to obvious reasons. But I will say this.. I have never thrown a surfboard away. On a great trip to South America I broke two boards in two of the  bigger days. I mean big. Big as in I can't see the beach anymore because its so Big. I broke em, and I paid to bring them back, repaired them and still use them.   I'm trying dude, I'm trying.

Unfortunately, no matter how much we try all we can do is slow down the rate that global warming is happening. There is no stopping it... this world's time in finite..eventually the balance will so unbalanced.. but I will do my part it making livable for a few extra years, even if I have to surf by carving out a dead coconut tree.. yoooo hoooooo

I will be back to read the other comments, as they are all perpectives of people that contribute and deserve that respect. I gotta headache..so i'm outta here for now.

oh BTW, I saw something on the boob-tube that talked about the polar bears. If they are classified as possibly becoming extinct (i.e. classified as an endangered species) then the government must draw up a plan to protect them by protecting their natural habitat. This means that global warming is a factor that directly threatens then and a need for a definite plan, as its a threat to the bears and their melting environment.  save the bears, brother... save the bears.

Laurie...... this is some interesting information. You here stories like this, but they don't seem to make it into the news as much as they should. It can be scary and thanks for sharing.

Angela...... thanks for the polite compliment. Some interesting and scary numbers that you quoted, in regards to children born and when they will be drivers......  great point and again, scary. Thanks for sharing.

Jennifer.....  thanks for the compliment also. I realized that I spent about 4 hours on this...  but I enjoyed it after learning and educating myself on a topic rarely discussed. Sure, there will be scientists to argue that this is not a big deal.... but I just go by proof and certain weather patterns. But I just do mortgages.

Jeff T......  kind of scary that this was on CNN.....   I wish I had watched it. Maybe I can find a link. Thanks for sharing.....

Nick......  nah, good Nick.. I do appreciate you stopping by. You bring some interesting stories to the table.

I also greatly appreciate that awesome compliment. I am not a goodie goodie here... I do recycle, but not always. But I don't litter....  I try.... but so many people just don't care. Anyhoo....

Jeff - great post.

I'm not in Al Gore's camp on this one.

Global warming may be happening... but in fact, before the last ice age there was some serious global warming... amazingly after too. Weather patterns have always changed and can be measured in 1000's or millions of years. A hundred years or so is hardly a blip. I would be so cavalier as to say that the only thing predictable about the weather is that it is unpredictable. Officially, we are still recovering from the "Little Ice Age" of the 1400's... let's hope we aren't too close to the next Ice Age.

Does that mean that I think we should be irresponsible in using our resources, or in how we treat the environment? No. My wife had me recycling in the mid 80's, in fact she collected (shamed them) for our neighbors in our cul de sac and then drove everything over to the center. Lisa is my moral compass.

Angus.... thanks for the compliment.....

Yes, the earth has gone through it's phases in the past.  Sure, there 100's of facts, scientists, and people that will say otherwise, that this is not a threat, not happening.....will never happen in our time.

On the other hand..... they are using reverse psychology, meaning.... hey, it's science....it's a crap shot at what people say....etc etc. But they try to get you to not keep your eye on the ball. Believe what one would want to believe.... in reality, do I use the past to say, hey, it happened before and we are just going through a "cycle".

No.....because there are harder and bigger facts than before. There is proof telling us that this can hit quicker....hurt us harder.... I had someone write to my e-mail address, based on this post. I asked him to paste what he wrote to me, in these comments. He wrote to me 3 different times... and he was more on what Angus said and believes in. And I might just copy it in here if he doesn't come back. I want people to get a feel for the other side or opinions. But what I wanted to say is.....  he mentioned the water and ice cubes in the glass theory.  If you have a few ice cubes in a glass and they melt, the water doesn't rise. Well, partially true. But one major thing forgotten.  Some of these ice bergs and and high.... some of the glaciers are on land, that run into the oceans. Some of these ice shelves aren't in the water...  SO... when these melt, the water runs into the ocean. This added water then makes the oceans rise.....  look around you near certain inlets.....  waterways...  READ the comment by Laurie Manny... this holds a lot of truth.

In any case.. thanks for sharing....

I just wanted to add this. I received 3 different e-mails from someone that read my post, but didn't apply the comments in here. I asked him to and he said he would try. But I wanted to keep this conversation going. This person, John, brings another perpsective, one like Angus was talking about.

here is what his first e-mail read:

Jeff, I can understand your concern about Global Warming but scare tactics don't work on the intelligent minority. the fact that we may be experiencing global warming has not been proved. In fact the world this year alone has broken many low temperature records. On top of that educated persons know the world has gone through many warming and cooling trends in the past maybe 4-5 ice ages as we call them.

But it is a leap of scientific Tom Foolery to lay it all out and blame humans for it. Contrary to your statements it is in fact a normal condition that the earth should experience warming as a normal cycle. What in fact will happen if we have a gradually warming climate, scientists say a "Greenhouse Affect" will occure. What does this mean, well more carbon dioxide. and what will happen with more carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, why of course the plant world will thrive, good or bad ?? What about all that ice that melts? The ice above sea level is full of oxygen, not very dense and won't add a great deal to water levels. And the ice below sea level? Let the ice melt in your ice tea, does it run over the edge of the glass?? Nope it doesn't.

What is causing all of these temperature changes, not humans for goodness sake, look up my friend at the SUN, don't stare at it, it's not a wives tail that you'll go blind. The Sun has more affect on the earth than any other single thing, and it my friend is causing our weather patterns to change, maybe only temporary changes at that. The Sun has been going through many record breaking Sun Spots Activity in recent years bombarding the earth with record setting electro magnetic pulses, these pulses control our weather. In fact electro magnetic fields control everything on the earth not just the weather. I urge you to read the following papers on the Sun and Recent Sun Spot Activity. I look forward to your response.

here is John's 2nd comment:

Jeff, I urge you to look over the following papers and make an educated assumption then and only then can you know what is really happening.

The following is a better explanation on why some predict global warming and why they do it. Not everyone's motives are just. We've all heard it, "It's the money fool". There are hundreds of billions of dollars at stake here. Only 20 years ago Al Gore was championing the "Global Cooling Myth"

and here is his last comment, but short...  and I didn't want to give his full name or e-mail, unless he comes into this discussion. But I did want to add his comments.

We can't always trust even those that seem to know what their talking about. You have to look at their motives. Right now the global warming effort is worth somewhere close to a trillion dollars if everyone falls into the cattle line and gives into the GW Lobby.

Angus..... my pleasure. Even though I have a strong opinion about this and feel that I am right..... lol  I never have a problem with someone else's opinion that might be different than mine.

I'll be back soon to kind of go through his comments and make my own comment.

Jeff,

Thanks for posting John's emails.  Those are pretty much my feelings on it.  Ice can "melt" independent of the temperature.  Just watch the sun make ice disappear on a sidewalk during the day even when the temperature doesn't get above 0 degrees.  I think the sun spot theory is most likely the cause of what we are seeing.  If so, resources can be used much better than to reduce CO2.  I'm open to more scientific study and hate when I hear that all the proof needed is already in and we need to start doing something and stop researching the causes.

Tim..........    thanks for stopping by and thanks for your opinion. Hence the reason why I asked John to post this, but I guess he didn't. And even though I didn't see eye to eye in regards to his comments, I felt that it offered a different view point. And possibly giving me a different view because I am not an expert on this subject. But I did enjoy doing the research on it.

In regards to the Sun Spot Theory, sure, that has something to do with the warming also. It's a combination of all that is taking place. But you really can't do anything about the sun spots, but you can try and correct on how the usage of CO2 affects the earth. In any case, thanks for your input and comments.

Hi Jeff...Did you post this over to the ECO-Friendly Group...we would really appreciate it if you would!...Right now I'mpast distressing over Global Warming and on to remedies. I think a good-part of the solution may well be in the hands of REALTORS. I'm serious! How many REALTORS are there? How many people do we deal with a year? How many fluorescent light bulbs can we  give as closing gifts? TONS! Al Gore talked about just using this type of bulb making a huge difference ...(should Global Warming be "real"...)... your Greenie Friend in Asheville...**-)    http://activerain.com/groups/GREEN

JaneAnne..... no, I didn't post this in that group, because I don't belong to it. There should be a way to post blogs that we think would fit a certain group and allowing this to happen. Is there a way that I don't know of yet?

overall.... thanks for your input and feedback.

Wow. So much great information. You should re-post this. Of course, I did follow the link from your newer post, but not everyone will. And if anything, this topic has become way more important in the last 2 years. I might re-blog it myself. I have to wait a few days though. I have other plans for now =)
