GMAIL, HOTMAIL & YAHOO! Are All Unprofessional Email Accounts For Real Estate.

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Compass 0524642

My email is EverydaySOLD@gmail.com. But some of my industry friends tell me I should have GregNino@GregNino.com as it is more professional.

I disagree.

My current website provides 10 free email accounts. But I'm not interested in using them. If I decided to quit using the website I'd lose the email account. If the company has problems with their servers or suffers a power outage then I'll be without email. Both of these examples have occurred when I had my email account affiliated with a website. Not getting emails is like not putting tires on race car.

Google isn't going to have outages and crashes with GMAIL. That's my opinion anyways. They have plenty of resources to ensure my email account doesn't experience any interruptions.

The same can be said for my brokerage. I wouldn't want to setup gregnino@remax.net as it's too labeled. At some point I may decide to leave RE/MAX.

No matter what choices I make I can keep my gmail.com email account and not worry about switching anything. I doubt very seriously a prospect is going to not work with me or contact me because my email has gmail.com at the end of it.

I think the crucial bit is not relying on an email tied to your company - I remember what a monumental job it was for me once in the past when I changed companies and who knows if I ended up losing anyone or not in that transition.  It is odd that gmail does seem to be perceived differently (and better) somehow than some of the other free services.  But now I am able to use one that sounds like it is company and yet it routes itself to my hotmail account (yep I love hotmail )  :)

I don't think it's the coolest personally.  The best solution is to sign up for whatever domain you want and route it through Google aps and you get the best of Gmail while using whatever domain you want.  Where's my $5 for that genius?

Hi Greg - Gmail has a lot of features and a lot more storage space than most e-mail accounts provided by other providers.  Some people have their own e-mail on their own domain name that forwards the mail directly to gmail.

I made the mistake of using a company address for everything. It was a nightmare when I left. Now I use the free address our MLS gives us. I have to assume that that will never go anywhere!

Ah...the e-mail discussion.  You know, I have never had a client tell me that my e-mail was unprofessional..I am not sure they even care.  I have a gmail and an sbcglobal (yahoo).  Had to change my e-mail from nightmaremedic when I got out of the Army though...that one raises eyebrows when I use it by accident lol :)!

Hey Greg,

GMail is a widely accepted means of having a professional email account.  I like how it integrates with other Google Apps.  I do however have my own domain set up and use an email associated with that domain whenever possible.

Best of success to you this year!

I too have to agree with you. Large storage capacity and you never have to worry about technical difficulties or having the company delete your account with out you having transferred your info to another service.

I'm one who believes in having your email at your own domain name. I do think it makes you look more "permanent."

But, maybe part of it is personal preference. Because I use Wild blue, getting to gmail is a slow pain in the neck. I have an account, but only check it every couple of weeks. I just don't like going there and don't like the way it's set up.

Greg interesting observation on your post and the comments. I used to have the MLS as my e-mail account and then one day they decided to eliminate it so after 10+ years I was forced to have a new e-mail. That is when I decided on homes@endrebarath.com    which connects to my website and forwards to my e-mail account. Now I can switch e-mail carriers any time and it will not affect it.

Hello Greg ... Great post and you are so of right! Gmail is one of the best besides a more personalized one like your talking about in your post. VB will stay with the more unprofessional email addresses though because there is always change and if a person changes companies for any reason they won't need to change their email address. I have around 12 different email addresses, but I am a very multi-tasked person with several different businesses.

I agree that you dont NEED to have an email that is not Yahoo or Gmail. The only time I have an issue (or I guess its juts my opinion) with using gmail is when the address is 'FOXYMOMMA5' @ gmail.com. I think if you can come up with something that is professional AND gmail, then it works just fine. I dont see any issues with the email you referenced above.

Agreed! I rarely use my remax email...and no one has ever said anything about using my sbcglobal account.  Keeps things simple! :)

It doesn't matter what anyone "thinks" or what are "opinions" are.....it's what the facts are!!! The fact is that our prospective clients (people you haven't met or spoken to) perceive us as less than professional when using a "free" email account.  That has been a proven fact in many studies. The ole saying of "the most dangerous person is the one that doesn't know what he doesn't know"  It appears there are many that have an opinion, but don't know the facts.  Secondly, I noticed several comments supporting the topic are from those who don't have a professional picture of themselves, but a unprofessional snapshot. Question: Don't you think having a snapshot of yourself speaks volumes to your "prospective" clients?

Although I understand many do not have a marketing background but we do all have common sense......I think.

You should register GregNino.com and use greg@gregnino.com as your email address for business purposes.  You can redirect it to everydaysold@gmail.com and still receive all your email as previously.  It'll look much more professional with your marketing compared to a gmail address.
