Do You Read The Post Before You Comment?

A very nice ActiveRain member had a featured post a few days ago. Her post was very important and an article that should be spread around the internet to help consumers.

She used an analogy in her post so the beginning of the post was setting the tone and creating the story. I read the entire post. It was not very long.

Then I went to make a comment about her message to consumers but most of the comments were about something entirely different. Most of the comments were "me" focused having read only the first part of her post.

At first I thought that I was wrong so I went back to read the post again. I was not wrong. I got a totally different message as did a few others who commented.

But over 90% of the comments were drive by comments on a featured post. That was an interesting observation.

Now, this blogger, being the nice person she is, did not make a big deal out of it although she did make a comment about the drive bys going on.

Do you read the entire post before you make a comment? Personally I would rather have a, "Great Post" comment than a drive by comment. At least with "great post" it could mean you read my post but really did not have something to add, which is fine with me.

It is however somewhat insulting that someone leaves a comment and has NOT read your post. Why bother?

Thanks Gail!  I don't mind the simple comments or the thank you comments. But when a comment has nothing to do with the message, that just is insulting to me.

Again, as has been much discussed before, I think a lot of transgressions of all sorts on AR are due to the point system.

I too am suggesting Katerina.  Thought provoking posts that time energy and effort.  The spirit of building the AR community deminishes when some people get focused on points rather than content. When you stop andrealize how much valuable content is posted and contributing comments to the subject you soon see who continues to thrive in our industry despite any economy.

Thanks for bringing this to the attention of those who should be getting the message rather than just simmering alone!

I guess people need to think about why they are posting a comment.  Is it for the points  To create more SPAM? ;o)  Or to engage in a valuable discussion....

Nestor and Katerina - I've seen this happen so many times.  I have to admit that I've had to go back and read a post that had such pretty photos that my eyes went there first.

Good question, and I don't know the answer (except maybe the points which by themselves are pointless).  I'm going to have to check out the post to see if I know which one you are talking abt.

Oh, and as I'm sure you know, I have plenty of people that wish me good luck in selling houses.  (a lot less of these comments now than a year ago, but I still get them and laugh).

I love Debbie's comment.  I get a lot of comments wishing me luck in selling that listing I posted about.  Oh well.

Sooner or later, if the same person pops in often enough, theri reputation is sealed.

Lenn- :) I always try to leave you keyword rich comments with the keywords in your localism posts. Of course, I have to look at what those keywords are:)

Pam- Some posts, I do have to read over a second time, sometimes a third time to understand what the post is about:)

Hi Nestor and Katerina. You make a good point. It must be annoying to put so much time and effort into coming up with good blogs only to get thoughtless comments back. I for one enjoy reading your posts, and even the insightful comments you get. Keep up the good work, you are the Wellington short sale agents I look up to.

A comment that clearly shows the reader didn't read the post is a comment made for point. What's just as bad is writing a post to find no one commented at all:)

Elisa- I am not so sure of that. A comment made for points is one that says, Great post, stuff like that most of the time. But I also have done that not for points but because that is the only thing to say about a post. This is more about not reading the entire post or even checking to see like who Debbie is for example. She is not an agent, she sells flooring. So that is just ignorance more than a point thing. :) IMO

Sue and Robin- I think there are different reasons other than points. I think laziness like you mentioned, is the key point. People do tend to be lazy. I am guilty of wanting to be lazy:) just don't have the time to be lazy:)

katerina - I wanted to say :Yes, I read" but it wouldn't be always true. I sometimes start reading, and then leave a comment to what I read. Usually it is when I strongly disagree, and don't feel like reading the whole rest once the position is know.

I rarely watch a movie to the end, so it is not really surprising for me...

Katerina~I don't get that, either. I can read very quickly, so I go through the whole thing. If I'm not interested, then I just move onto the next one, rather than wasting a precious comment that would actually MEAN SOMETHING.

Jon- Oh that is so different than me:) If I disagree, I want to read the whole post so that I don't assume something not there and make an as$ of our myself:)

Gayle- I don't mind the ones that are just, great post, etc, those are ok, you get points for comments left so that is just fine with me:) But making a comment that has nothing to do with the post is disrespectful because the message was not read before an opinion was formed.

Katerina - I am sometimes disagreeing with just one statement, not the whole blog. So, I do not disagree with the blog, but with the statments made, and I read them. When you read a book, how long does it take you to decide whether this is worth reading or not.

Do you need to read to the end to make this determination?
