Which of the following causes do you think caused the trees above to be denuded of their lower foliage?
Rhizome Infestation

Potassium Deprivation
Dog with Itchy Butt
If you answered #5, you're right.
Moose, the World's Itchiest Dog, is the culprit, but it took us a couple of years to actually catch him in the act. Moose likes nothing better than to get his lower back scratched. If you're sitting with your arm hanging off a chair and you make a claw out of your hand, Moose will come up and scratch his back on it until you get tired - the record, so far, for humans willing to scratch Moose's back is 23 minutes. If you think you can beat that, Moose would love to hear from you.

Cats also love their backs scratched but not that long...Have you tried using a Furminator...he may have a lot of fur in that spot itching to be shed...I am just throwing out ideas, perhaps you have tried it. LOL, he is a handsome dog. A
Hi John & Alexandra - Thanks for your comments. We've tried everything - the vet has looked at his back closely and can't find anything, except the scabs he gets from the trees, and he's on skin supplements, but I think he just really likes his back scratched.
Dick who would have thought, i was thinking deer, spider mites but not the dog. I was wondering who far the fires are from you. I was worreied seeing it last night having gone through it in Montana.
Aw Moose, what a sweet face. I'll bet you missed that mug while you were in Mexico. ( We were sure happy to see our pal last night). Bummer we can't let them sit next to us on the plane...I'm sure Mac ( and Moose) would love it and behave better than some passengers. :)
But are you sure he doesn't have another problem? I know of dogs who like to be petted, then they turn around and show you that they prefer the scratch on the behind instead of the pat on the head. Maybe, all that scratching against the bushes resulted in a colony of fleas on their butts?
I needed a good laugh tonight and you certainly gave it to me. I agree with John, must be a sore butt at times rubbing it on the tree Maybe that dog needs some shots to take away the itching. We had a dog who would scratch himself raw and the vet gave him a shot every month and no more scratching.
Hi Dick & Mary! Gorgeous dog you have! Our dog is the same way. He would have you scratch his back for hours if he could. We've never timed who would scratch him the longest though!
That Moose - gotta love a pooch that takes care of his own needs! We have a Malinois that's created a very distinctive sculpted shape to our front hedge through a similar process, Dick. We'd try to stop her, but the look on her face when she scratches that itch is just priceless! :-)

That's hilarious! He was really going for it on those trees to wear the foliage down like that.
