Cranberry Beans - Pretty Face - No Flavor

I came across these pretty Cranberry Beans at the Farmers Market Saturday. I had never heard of or seen them before. But I bought some because they were new to me and I love to try new things. They were pretty to look at.....

Cranberry Beans

even out of the pod they were pretty.

Cranberry Beans

I cooked them for dinner and thought where’s the flavor? Craig said they tasted like Butter Beans because he put butter on his. I tried some lemon squeezed on mine. Still nothing.

I googled them and found out they are very popular in New England, and it’s best to buy fresh if you can find them rather than the dried beans. But I won’t have to worry about that because no-one thought they were worthy of buying a second time.

Has anyone else had any experience with them? Maybe Dale Baker knows about them.

Guess I just fell for a pretty face.

Toni

Sounds like just another petty face, I never hear about them before your post.

Good luck and success.

Hey Toni - I asked Debbie ... her input was bacon grease and even a couple pieces of fried bacon too.

The only way to make them taste good it to kick it up during the cooking process.  John is right some type of pork product would be best.

Never seen these beans before, Toni - but I bet they would be tasty in a roasted vegetable tian (I use white beans in the recipe and I don't think they have much flavor - until they are tossed w a bit of olive oil, salt/pepper, sweet potato, red onion, and green/red pepper and then roasted in the oven).  I can see why you fell for them - they are pretty!

Toni, my mom always used fat back, pork, bacon when cooking beans.  One of my sisters uses butter when she cooks beans.

Lou - thanks, me either.

John - that does sound like it will make it better!

Kathy - I agree.

Li - let me know if you find them.

Karen - that sounds like my kind of meal! Thanks.

Rob - sadly Dale didn't know either but since I'm not ever going to buy them again--no loss.

Rebecca - we used butter with them and that's the only flavor we could detect.

Dale - that sounds good too. Thanks.

Beautiful beans, but I've never seen them before.  I agree a little bacon or ham would add flavor.

I've never seen them before either, but if you think about it beans are pretty bland.  You jazz them up with whatever flavor you fancy -- olive oil and garlic, bacon or ham.   Bland isn't bad, if it hangs out with strong personalities  ; >

Alexandra - I should have done that.

Kay - I did cook them with ham but it didn't seem to help them much.

Dianne - I know people like that :)
