Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) offer various care options and living choices. Most of these CCRC communities will have certain eligibility requirements in order to live there. These requirements may be based on age, income, health and financial assets. Communities like these are usually for seniors 55 years of age or older. Some communities may require seniors to be 62 years of age or older. The senior communities may be designed around a golf course, located in the mountains, or at the beach. We have a couple of senior communities in North Georgia's Blue Ridge Mountains (Fannin County) but it's my opinion that we are lagging behind and it is time for our developers to pay much more attention to the need and desire of many baby boomers to have these lifestyle choices available.
Recently, I read in a magazine entitled "After 55" and learned various terms which define these CCRC communities as follows:
Apartments
This type of housing includes town homes, condos and are classified as apartments for all ages. These apartments offer a maintenance free lifestyle and several recreational activities. Then there are "senior apartments" and this type of housing has an age requirement, usually 55 or older and sometimes 62 or older. With either type of apartment, seniors can have an independent lifestyle.
Independent Living
Any independent active senior who is seeking an apartment lifestyle but with services tailored specifically for seniors. For example: restaurant dining, transportation, social activities and possibly housekeeping in some instances are a few of the services and amenities seniors can enjoy with this type of housing.
Assisted Living
This type of housing offers personal assistance to seniors on an as needed basis. These services may include meals, bathing, dressing and dispensing medication. Also, transportation and recreational activities designed to promote socializing may be available. Assisted Living communities may stand alone or could be a part of Independent Living housing.
Alzheimer's/Memory Care
These housing communities are specifically designed for the Alzheimer resident. These homes may be part of an Assisted Living facility or stand alone. Personal assistance is offered on an as needed basis.
Skilled Nursing
Seniors who need medical care around the clock, seven days a week might choose to live in this type of housing community. These homes are more like a hospital setting. Also, short term rehabilitation services may be offered. These communities are licensed and regulated by the respective state's health department.
Respite Care
Some Assisted Living communities offer seniors short term care providing a break to caregivers who continuously care for a loved one. This community is an alternative for family members who are full time caregivers by providing a supervised environment for seniors.
