Real Estate Agents, Good Deeds Do Payoff: Salute to Wesley: The Subway Hero

By
Real Estate Agent with Jackson Erwin Realty, Inc.

In Today's Society,

It's hard for many to envision the "good" in mankind. Often times, we hear of violent crimes, trickery, and plain-old cruelty going on in the world. However, there's always some one, some human, some angel that reminds us of how important it is to be kind, caring, helpful and to serve others. These "angels" show us that we as individuals can utilize these good principles to greatly impact our world and turn what seems as a tragedy into a blessing! Afterall, these are some of the same principles that the National Association of Realtors ask us to employ throughout our daily activities of serving our clients and our community.

Folks, today's angel is  Mr. Wesley Autrey . You see, to sum it up, this gentleman---while in the subway, noticed a young, teenage boy fall right into the path of a subway train as a result of a seizure. With quick thinking and an unselfish bone in his body, Wesley GoodByed his two children---pushing them in the hands of a bystander and went to the aid of the victim. Within moments, Wesley realized that he did not have time to remove the teenager from the train's rails nor could he simply let the young male suffer from the perils of a subway train. Instead, Wesley reacted quickly. He stretched out his long arms and wrapped them around the teenager's body, lifted him up slightly to lock his feet around the boy's legs and threw himself over him---covering his body just in time for the subway train to pass over their bodies. Miraculously, the young male was saved from death and is now recovering in a hospital!

I'm sure we can all agree, Wesley risked a lot. His children, family---even his own life. However, what he gained wasn't even imaginable some 24 hours ago. He got to hear the cries of joy from a happy father thankful that his son was saved. He felt an enormous sense of pride, and completeness. Wesley, without a doubt, felt whole again---a feeling that many humans today can't seem to acquire. Besides this, Wesley was rewarded monetarily. Donald Trump, gave him $10,000 when he heard the news. Scholarships were distributed to his children, TV stations are requesting his presence...and the list goes on. I'm sure he didn't do a good deed to reap these spotlight/financial benefits. He certainly did not have time to think and plan---weighing the pros vs. cons of doing so. However, he has reminded us all that we can be Heros daily to someone who is less fortunate. Whether it's extending kind words, providing free consultations/advice, donating our time, funding a charity...The rewards will surely pay off in ways that we can't even imagine. So today, Mr. Wesley Autrey , I Salute You & Thank You for Reminding Me That There Are Angels Within This World! My fellow Active Rain Members, It's Time We Spread Our Wings!

"By the way, my practice is built on my wonderful family of clients and the awesome referrals they provide. There may be someone you know who will purchase or sell real estate here in North Carolina this year. There's also someone you may know who's in need of saving a home from foreclosure. I can help! Please refer my services and/or contact me directly and I will personally take care of them promptly."

Jaclyn, When I heard this story on the news I was shocked.  The clearance under a subway train is not that great and to physically place two men under the train was beyond my comprehension.  Wesley Autrey's sacrifice brings tears to my eyes because he is a true hero.  All it could have taken was one jerk from the young man and Wesley's life could have ended.  And we get training in risk reduction!  The irony of it!

I saw this on the news tonight and was amazed. I have been in the Manhattan Subways and I just cannot imagine this feat of courage. Thank God for the guardian angels that were working overtime!

Selfless people far outnumber the selfish... they just don't always have so dramatic a stage to demonstrate their capacity for good.  The saved young man is fortunate but Wesley may be even more so-- he has earned a lifelong self-respect that will make it hard for him to ever walk without a head held high.  I'd like to think that we all have that capacity for goodness somewhere in our being-- looking for the right form of expressing itself.

Seems it's a week for hero behavior in NYC... catch this incredible follow-up I saw in the SF Chronicle about a baby falling off a fire escape from 4 stories high and being caught by Good Samaritans!
