This is the old view of Headlee's Drug Store which was located in downtown Searcy Arkansas.

This is another view of the building.

This is the look of the building today.  Simpson, Simpson, Collier and Brock, Searcy attorneys, held an open house which I dropped in on.  It was impressive to see how they have expanded from the large building on the corner to the one adjoining.  They will probably do more to the exterior but the inside is finished out beautifully.

Curious?  Here they are.  From the left, Collier, Simpson, Brock and Simpson.  I'm sure they would love to have you stop by and see what they have done to keep downtown Searcy alive and vital.

Thanks, you guys!!

Mary and Don and other Sleuths, the White  County Historic Society is holding open house at their village next weekend.  I may find the Toler book there.  They  usually have the old books for sale.  I have picked up several there. If I find one I'll buy it for you Mary, assuming it is not too high priced!!

Oh!   I just noticed our magic man, Don, already said at the bottom of his comment that you can buy them through WCHS!!!  Just order one.  That's easy....

Don, you have a treasure in that yearbook.  What else is in it?  We may need to put them on the blog!  Who are those people?

Ludean:  You made Bob's day by remembering when Krogers was on Spring St....sorta next to Penneys.  Also our Historical Oracle, Dorothy Yarnell Warden, remembers it, too.  That's 3!  (I don't remember it)....Anyone else?????

Mary, you were too young.  I remember it well, but don't remember when it moved.

My grandmother was a very frugal shopper, so when she went to the grocery store, she went to whichever one had a penny or two saving, if that meant going to all of them that day.  Didn't use any extra gas, as we walked everywhere we went.  And, yes, we were healthy, with all that walking.  What was the name of that little lady who walked a lot in Searcy.  Was it Armstrong?  I can't remember for sure.

I lost some of my memory while I was sick, but some of it returns.  What I lost mostly is recent memory, not long ago.  By the way, while sick, I spent 3 days back in England, they tell me.  Cheap way to travel, but I didn't lose anything over there.   Don't remember if I enjoyed it or not.

Anita, glad to help.  We older citizens remember some things well.

I love to read Ms. Dorothy's writings of her memories.  She and some others sang at our church a few years ago.  She and I did some remembering (csn't spell that other word) that day.

Mary, I haven't read that email yet.  I get tired very quickly.  I will get to it soon.

Anita, looks like I mis-spelled can't.

I have given it a good try but can't identify the sign as to the product advertised. I believe it is Fortunes but can't find a brand during the time of the picture. I suspect it was the early 40's. I can tell you what was in that place before the building was Headlee. The building housed the Snipes Drug store and the sign displayed that name.

I used a image recognition web service and font recognition web service to see if I could find a brand and to ID the letters.

The cars are probably late 30's or early 40's Fords or Chevys. There's not enough detail to distinguish between them. Also the images are too poor to see enough detail.

I believe the truck is a 1950 Chevy Pickup. What do you think?

Finally getting to answer Mary about when Kroger was on Spring St.  Bob remembers being there with his mother, his mother being asked how old he was - he was 3.  That would have been l939.  He says, though, that it stayed there for quite a few more years, so he's saying up until about l945.  (you can't prove it by me)....

Someone dig out the old phone books.  I am same age as Bob and I don't remember the year they moved.  My next question is:  Where did they (Krogers) move to?

Ludean:  they moved behind the post office, when the post office was on West Arch.  Next to where Person's Furniture Store was...OR it might be the same building but I don't think so.  I'll ask Bob when he comes in.  Interesting to me:  no phone listed anywhere in my l957 Phone Book.    Do you remember when it burned?

We have gotten out of my living locally now.  I was a small kid when Krogers was on Spring by Mayfair.  When it was by Post Office, I was married with 3 kids in school.  My mother and sister lived behind Krogers in a house over by post office is reason I remember that well. I was home for visit while they lived there.  Time sure has a way of getting away from me, but I have enjoyed this look back with you all.

Bob thinks it was in l956..when it burned.  He knows he was at college, and I know I was in Searcy going to Harding, before I left for Vandy in the fall of l956.   It MIGHT have been sometine in l955.

My dad was on the volunteer fire department, and I remember the fire whistle waking me up....Daddy finding out where the fire was and going to it. I'm not sure Mother and I didn't drive down there not too long after that....we probably did as we were all awake and Kroger burning was a big deal.  I could see the flames in the sky from my house at l008 W. Arch.

Another blog just grew legs and walked!  It was fun to find Kroger and fires and all sorts of things on the comments.  Thanks you sleuths for giving us more Searcy history.

Hey, Sleuths!  Look what I found at the Pioneer Village open house May 6 2012!  It is the Kroger Store when it was on Spring Street!  I believe this blog addressed that. Forgive the reflections.  I had to take picture of a picture.
