As the parents squawked from a nearby tree this baby Mockingbird wasn't ready to let go of the rail and test her wings. Perhaps if they hadn't built their nest under a 5th floor balcony they might have been able to convince their little ones to move out of the nest a little sooner.
I sat close by to watch for a few minutes. Finally after a few test flutterings the decision was made to let go. It wasn't graceful but this bird has now officially flown the nest.
Awwww ... that is so cute! Sometimes you just have to let go, have faith, and hope for the best ... applies to baby mockingbirds and people too :)
Mother nature at her best. Mom might be tweeting "Just do it, don't over think the whole flying thing"
Looks like he should have flown before now. Such a cutie and so fluffy! What a fun experience to watch! Thanks for sharing Cindy!
Tammy-we've got so many nests around the community this year. I think the warm spring brought them out in droves.
Adrian-I'm not a huge fan of mockingbirds as they can be nasty. But when they are just learning to fly I'll cut them some slack.
Kathy-the parents were squawking away, flying back and forth. I'm sure if they could have pushed they would have.
Cindy~ She looks pretty confident. I'm glad she finally took her first "flight". I'm sure it felt good to spread her wings.
Donna-she sat for a very long time. Mom must have finally threatened to go Angry Birds on her and she took off.
William-we give our little ones strollers, scooters and all other sorts of options. For the birds it's fly or else.
So cute Cindy and your description made us feel like we were there watching. Amazing to see right?
Hi Cindy,
Great photo and looks like this baby bird has been eating a lot of worms as it is a round little guy. Thanks for sharing. I have several nests in my backyard and the mockingbirds are so vocal.
