A few days ago, my wife stopped for a brief visit in my office. She was passing through having collected some apparently DEAD plants from elsewhere in the office. We visited for a few minutes, and then she left ... leaving one very pathetic looking plant sitting on the edge of my desk.
I saw this plant as a challenge.
Is this a test?
Can I bring it back to life?
What will it take?
How long?
So I went to our kitchen and found a saucer to put under the pot - and a cup of water, and I watered my new friend . . . and pruned the dead leaves . . . 30 minutes later, water dripped over the edge of the desk onto my leg - Startling - I mentioned to our MCA that the plant had peed on me.
Next day, I found a deeper bowl and was able to add more water.
Three days later, the plant is ALIVE.
Most everyone who passed my door commented on the dead foliage on my desk. I heard everything from "That's sad" to "That's bad Feng-shui" to "I can't BELIEVE you killed that poor little plant."
This plant is now flourishing . . . I DID IT! HOORAH!
As I was getting ready to leave the office today - slightly beaten and VERY tired from a long day of issues and classes, our MCA sat down in my office and said that she and her assistant had been watching the plant and that they had decided that the plant was a symbol of one of the agents I coach. It had entered my office deflated and close to death - and that I had breathed life into it, and it was now healthy and happy.
She made my day . . .
She clarified - That plant represents the businesses of the folks you are coaching. When people leave your office, they have more life in them than they had when they entered. JUST What I needed. Thank you Jan.
At the end of a long day, I hope you'll remember my plant and know that you are out there breathing life into people every day . . . and when you see the opportunity, do a "Jan" and let someone else know that you noticed that their work is making a difference in other people's lives.
THIS is what makes the world go round.
Best,
b
