Maple Flooring in Westchester NY

Maple flooring in Westchester NYIf you're looking for a light colored hardwood floor, consider maple  flooring for your home in Westchester NY. Maple flooring is a light blond color with low graining. It’s a light, smooth look that can open up any room and give a modern, contemporary and northern European feel.

Maple flooring is harder than oak. On the Janka hardness scale, Maple is a 1450 vs. red oak which is 1290. Maple is lighter than oak flooring and its grain is smoother. While traditionally a light blond color, the shade of maple flooring can differ depending on its age and the area where it was grown. Maple’s appearance also differs based on how the trees are cultivated. Flame maple, quilted maple and bird’s eye maple are 3 different types grain patterns that will give your room 3 different looks.

Maple flooring in Westchester NYMaple flooring comes in many grades, and it’s important to know what grade you are getting. The clearer the maple, the more expensive it tends to be. Natural flaws such as mineral streaks and pin knots tend to lower the grade and the price of a maple floor. Some of the lower grade maples have a lot of gray boards, and sometimes the samples can be misleading.

Like other hardwoods, maple flooring can be stained darker. Maple tends to be more challenging to stain as it is closed pored, and as a result, sometimes the stains look blotchy. It’s important to add a conditioner to maple before staining, to open the pores and often maple requires a 2nd coat of stain. And, interesting enough, some of the darker brown stains turn gray for a very sleek and stylish look. (Gray has become a very chic color regardless of whether it is tile or metal flooring, carpet or hardwood. Because of its natural beauty, however, most people prefer to use a clear finish that protects the maple flooring while letting its true color and grain show through.   Maple flooring in Westchester NY

Maple flooring has a close fine, uniform texture and is generally straight-grained with a natural luster. Hard maple hardwood for flooring can exhibit a bird's-eye or burl grain. Bird's-eye grain in hard maple hardwood flooring resembles small circular or elliptical figures. Clusters of round curls are known as burl.

All woods change color with time, and maple tends to grow more yellow with age. That's another characteristic to consider.

Scientific name: Acer saccharum

Maple Origin: Throughout most of North America; concentrated in the eastern United States and Canada, particularly in the mid-Atlantic and Lake states.

We love maple flooring and have it in our kitchen and dinette....a contrast to darker cherry cabinets...but now I know more about it than when we chose it  !

I have northern maple flooring in my master bedroom. I actually prefer the grade 1 because I like the flaws. To me it looks more natural.

Hi Debbie,

There's hard maple and soft maple, about the same colors. But as with the flooring the hard maple is used for more durability.

I like the softer tones of a good maple colored wood.

Have a great day in the New York area,

Best, Clint Mckie

We use to see a lot of maple used during the 1960s and 1970s.  I was especially fond of it.  I'm glad to see it being featured once again!

I love the look of maple flooring when it is new, but to me Maple does not age as well as other floor colors.  Also maple doesn't seem to shine up as well as other colors.  Any suggestions?

Hi Debbie,

Hi Debbie,

I have natural maple flooring in my entire downstairs. When I bought the house they had some kind of shaggy rug with the maple around the edges in my family room. My dogs thought the shag rug was grass and were always clawing at it so I had it replaced.

The manufacturer had discontinued the color of my flooring as it had been 4 years so instead of trying to match it with another brand we just went with a flooring that had 3 colors in it and it blends nicely. Looks great and was installed beautifully as they made a diagonal cut when it goes from room to room so it looks like we did it on purpose.

Here is the problem. I have 3 puppies and one is a white chihuahua and she sheds constantly. It is amazing that a 6 lb. dog could shed so much fur but she does. You can see it on the dark flooring but not on my maple floor,

So if you have a light colored dog, get light colored flooring, dark dog-dark flooring.

C-O-N-G-R-A-T-S on your feature.

Debbie, I think maple is a beautiful wood without a lot of grain and almost no knots. It looks great down.

Bobbie - Thank you and I'm so glad to hear that.

Clint - Yes, on the floors, they use the hard maple.

Michael - Thank you.  I really appreciate that.

Richie - Yes, if you don't wear shoes, it will last so much longer, regardless of species.

Captain Wayne - Thank you so much.

Myrl - Oh that is cool.  I didn't realize that.

Laura - I agree...it doesn't age as well...it turns more yellow over time.  Maple is harder than oak and a bit harder to refinish.  It's critical that you have a great sanding team in place for maple (it's more important for maple and pine which are very tricky).  And, it helps if you add a conditioner to open the pores.

Kristin  - That is so interesting and I'm glad they found a creative solution for you.  And, yes you are so right about blending pet fur with the color of your hardwood (or even carpet).  It is definitely a consideration and I often mention this to my customers.  The tricky part is if they have 2 dogs w/ different colors.

Debbie - I'm glad you like it.  Yes, the clear grade is close to knot free, but cheaper versions can have a more rustic look and lots of knots.
