The Iron Horse Grill in Pleasantville NY is one of our family's favorite restaurants.
It's housed in the historic 1904 former Pleasantville Train Station building. The 2011 Zagat Survey has described the food as "extraordinary to perfection". They call it a "class act" that "stands out" for it's "superb seasonal cuisine", "dedicated staff" and "quaint setting.. It's an intimate setting and only seats 60 (so make your reservations...it's well worth it).
We have been to the Iron Horse Grill the last 2 years in a row for my dad's birthday. He goes there often...and they all know his name. My dad even ran into someone he knew, so it made the evening extra nice. Phil McGrath is the owner and chef and gives the restaurant a real personal touch. He even recognzes my dad and knows what kind of dishes he'll like.
For an appetizer, my niece and I shared sauteed shrimp and it was so good that she ate every bit...even that teensy bit inside the shell. It was great. My brother was also thrilled with his (but I forgot what he ordered). My parents split one of the specials and it was gone very quickly.
For the main course, I ordered the Angus Filet Mignon and it was exquisite. It was tender and juicy and not a spot of fat to be seen. But, my niece declared that she had the best dish of all - the lamb. But truthfully, all 6 of our dishes were delicious, so it was a tough contest.
Of course, it then came time for the best part - dessert. Of course my dad got a specialize dish that said "Happy Birthday Paul." I ordered some sort of coffee/espresso ice cream/cake and my brother got the passionfruit blueberry tart and my niece got ice cream. They were all tasty and beautifully adorned.
As a special treat, my niece and my dad got a special tour by the chef of the kitchen. She had made the owner a pretty picture for the Iron Horse and he said he would hang it up in the kitchen if she signed it. My niece was on Cloud 9 and thought this was the coolest thing. Well maybe not as cool as her Ipad, but still very very cool.
I hope we get to go again for my dad's birthday next year, but I know he'll be back there before then.
