YouTube Thursdays 7/12/2012 - iPad video production.

By
Industry Observer with Nature As Neighbors

YouTube Thursdays continues after a week off for America's Birthday celebration. I hope YouTube Thursdaysyou had a wonderful 4th of July holiday with your family and friends.  I was in Denver and got to meet fellow AR members, Mimi Foster and Joan Cox. ( Both delightful women!)

Now, back to Youtube Thursdays. Several weeks ago,  I talked with Cheryl Ritchie about making videos with an iPad. After a phone conversation,  I sent a few links to help get her started, and obviously Cheryl jumped into her first effort quickly.

I think she is getting some guidance in this video from Steve and Jan Bachman - it showcases the importance of a tripod and moving s.l.o.w.l.y.  By the way, Cheryl admits that it took her about 6 hours to get this produced.

The good news, with video production, = the more you do you it, the better you get, and more efficient too. A video takes me about an hour per minute to produce. (Including voice-work and music mixing.) Therefore, a 1:30 video takes about 1.5 hours.

Most of the video marketing experts suggest that videos should be short and entertaining, if we expect people to watch them - isn't that the goal?  Therefore, I always try to shoot for videos between 1 to 2 minutes - max.

If you want to try movie making with your iPad, I suggest upgrading to  iMovie11 and purchasing this easy to follow guide for $ 4.99, Tutor for iMovie 11.  And of course, a tripod for your Ipad! Or go all out and get the iPad movie mount for your iPad 2 & 3.

Remember to join VBloggers and YouTube Thursdays . Our two groups will help inspire you and you'll get tips from other Active Rain Vbloggers regarding video marketing and YouTube channels.

Hi Debb, This is my first YouTube Thursday in the Rain. Hope I can keep up. The iPad has such a great camera that is a wonderful idea.

Cheryl, I can't afford "not" to take advantage of video marketing. I am a real believer...:) ( Understatement eh?)

Mary, isn't it though? I thought it was a perfect way to showcase WHY we need to hold the camera steady and move Slowly. :)

Cal gal, so happy that it was timely. I would love to see video of your kayak adventures...:)

Debbie, I know that I am going to give the iPad 2 a whirl. Put my Canon Vixia on ice for a bit. ( Hey I saw your video and featured it today.)

Hi Debb,

Thanks for dropping by and we are all fine. My wife and I went to Washington and NYC for about 5 days and I have been very busy with full time job and real estate. We had a really good toime going on our anniversary trip.

I had a builder who actually fired my client and never signed the final contract. The dispute was over ceiling treatments which the salesperson assistant said were part of the deal.. What a mess and now I have to find my clients another home hopefully this weekend. There is also a deadline for moving into the home and getting regsitered for school!

Something is wrong with my computer as I get no actual video footage when I play a video. I might have to bite the bullet and buy the new IPad as I have the original and it is difficult to recharge.

Take care and thanks for always sharing your video tips.

Thanks for all the great info Debb.  I've been taking some videos with my ipad and it's getting better.  Still haven't gotten to editing but now I will.  It's a blast!

Debbie, I'm still a fairly new iPad user and haven't tried to take videos with it yet. I'm relieved to learn that it's not only me who takes so much time in producing and editing a video though.

Debb, another great informative post on using videos and VBlogging!  Thanks for the plug to the group too!  Cheryl is inspiring a lot of folks to use their new iPads for sure.  But since my 'original' one is working I'll have to stick to the Flip and iMovie on my MAC.  I need to do to more so my time gets more inline with yours.

I love traveling to places and meeting other AR members. Janis and I even visited AR HQ on a recent trip to Seattle. What a great group of folks. So warm and friendly. Kerrie and her buds even invited us to join them for a local AR meet and greet in Kirkwood. What a wonderful and fun experience.

Anna, your attitude is always the BEST. You approach  most all things with a sense of adventure...that's what makes you such a cool woman.

David, wow, that is so amazing to me. :) I still have the iPhone 3 too, but, as you know I don't use it for video.

Thanks for the tips Debb, I never knew it was that time intensive, probably why my one attempt at video was so poor, I will have to budget more time for the next one.

Thanks, bob

Silvia. I say if you're going to take the time to shoot video, take the time to produce and edit it well. If nobody wants to watch it, then it's a big waste of time...few us can afford that. :)

Pamela, love your little Furfest iMovie trailer...super cute. Always great to see you.

I do lots of video on my Nikon and I prefer to use what's called a monopod - 1 leg and it gives me the ability to keep the shoot level but pan rooms & outdoors easily. I'm currently working on the lighting - I test & find the best place to stand in a room to avoid how video gets dark as it adjusts to changes in lighting ... Good luck and practice makes perfect.
