Life is Good - But are you Retro?

By
Real Estate Agent with DFW FINE PROPERTIES 0506509

Well, here we are folks less than half way away from the first of the year. Life is good for some but are you caught up in a Retro World?

TODAY YOU'RE IN; TOMORROW YOU'RE OUT!

Retro means culturally outdated. As they say in fashion, today you are in; tomorrow you are out!

Now is a good time to take inventory of electronic media. iPads sure are cool and seems to be a wave of the future. With an iPad, there’s always something new to learn. The longer you wait to join the iPad world, the further away you’ll be from everybody else who is or who has gotten acclimated.

STOP, DROP & SHOP

As we inch closer to 2013, now is a great time to shop for bargains, price and compare. Sign up for classes, check your eye-glasses, and look at your clothes. Do you need a hair cut or a new look? What new business tools will help you to advance? If you’ve been in business for 10, 15, 20 years or more, the First Time Home Buyer generation is miles ahead of you when it comes to technology.  In business, as in fashion, today you’re in; tomorrow you’re out!

IF IT ISN'T BROKEN, WHY FIX IT?

Why do some people remain retro – because it’s comfortable and who wants to spend more money on replacing the tools that work. They say, “If it isn’t broken, why fix it?” But is that true?  Being outdated has a price to pay – time to get caught up to the rest of the world.

PAST OR PRESENT?

I like retro art – but is it functional? I own some nice Art Deco but it’s just a thing from the past that sits on my window sill. I could make it a center piece- but the truth is it’s not even a conversation piece!  Even the color is out!

As a Realtor® I go into many different types of homes. My eyes are now trained to distinguish between good art, color, style. The little voice inside me says, "What were those people thinking?" On the flip side, my clients have eyes too. When they find something they like, or if they have a question, they ask. If I don’t have an answer, they are searching for answers right before my eyes!

THE LAST SUPPER

I may have come from the information age, but this new generation is living proof that new technology makes you smarter and faster. In today’s business world, it’s no longer acceptable to say, “I don’t know, let me get back to you.” In business, that IS the kiss of death. I’ve had clients who I recently tried that line on, we had a good rapport, and they took me out to dinner. I call that my Last Supper because I never heard from them again.

The truth is, we all want to hang on to parts of the past, nobody wants to spend money if they don’t have to, and why should we spend money on stuff we don’t need?

The problem with this type of thinking is that eventually, our past catches up to us and we are forced to make changes – some for the better; some for the worse.

EXPERIENCE IS YOUR TEACHER; TECHNOLOGY IS YOUR FUTURE!!!

I’ve recently joined the iPad world. Is it challenging? Yes. Is it fun? You bet! Are there days when it’s stressful because I don’t know how to do something? Of course! But trying something new keeps me current. Moving into the iPad world makes me feel like I’m taking one step forward. In business, you have to keep moving forward. Nobody wants to be left behind. I have learned that Experience & Advanced Technology keeps me forever young. Being comfortable is not always good but life is good when you the next step that’s right in front of you – iPad world, here I come!

Good Sunday morning Patrica -

What no feature on this?  I like my iPad used it just last night when buyers were making an offer and had a few questions.  So whip out the ole iPad and showed them in vivid color exactly what they wanted to know.  Works for me.  I will say at first I didn't like the thing but now it seems like the only way to go when on the fly or for a quick search.

Patricia, some great points to bring us back and forward. Technology can be scary as you say but patience, trial and error brings success. Good luck to you, keep forging forward and with deep passion embrace the success of the past.

Hi Patricia - Clients expect instant answers these days but will still stay with you when you provide quality researched information even if it takes a little longer to obtain. Having said that, an Ipad is great tool for our business. I'll get one soon :-)

Hi Patricia, I agree with the importance of keeping up on the tech tools and keep up on the latest developments in real estate.

Wholeheartedly disagree with the hgtv mentality of throwing out a perfectly good house because it does not match what one of their fashion gurus thinks we should embrace this month.

There is a lot of character in old houses and the people who enjoy them, and I have very little respect for those who buy these, destroy them and put in new modern inferior materials just because the fashion gurus tell them thats what they should do.

This is a great blog, thanks for posting it!

I keep talking about getting an iPad and will do it before the year is out.........I went into the Apple store in Tampa and decided I will NOT purchase it there.............my son needed to talk to somebody and after over an HOUR, we left.............they need more Apple stores if they expect people to come to them. Driving 45 minutes and then waiting over an hour is NOT acceptable.

Patricia--Excellent post, right up my alley so to speak and many others, too, I am sure.  I hate to change or update as it means that I have to learn something new.  Get out of my comfort zone.

Okay, okay.  Guess I will agree to give that speech on technology that I declined this morning.  Thanks for the nudge.

PS  I will reblog.

Hi Patricia, I just got a new I-Pad myself and can soooo relate to the learning curve...but the ease of having so much at your fingertips is worth it...and like you said, it's fun! Now instead of saying " I don't know, I'll get back to you", It's more like "let me Google that..or let me check my I-Pad" Love that!

Debb,

Keeping current with Real Estate issues is easier with the iPad and advanced technology. I love how you embraced it long before me.

The consumer's expectation of Realtors is a lot more demanding today and a Realtor has to be savvy!

Roger,

Having an iPad is like discovering something new everyday! Mine was a gift and I am thrilled someone thought highly enough of me to have it. They said they wanted me to excel in my business. My friends told me I was worth it. I think that's the mindset you have to have, whenever you are considering something that will improve the way you do business.

Thanks Sharon,

I think it's easy to feel guilty about what others have or don't have. Thanks for your positive energy in the RAIN!

Clint,

Mine was a gift but I recognize the value in it now. I don't think you should put it off. You need to stop at an Apple Store or talk to friends of yours whom you trust. If you do get one, I don't think you'll regret it at all.

Larry & Sheila, no matter how you slice or dice it, the clothes we wear, the car we drive, how we speak and communicate, and how we interact with others, we send a message and how the world perceives us often makes a difference.

In terms of professionalism, stop in any store and look around. You'll quickly figure out who is and who isn't a sales person. If you're at a party, you'll quickly discover who is the host. When it comes to Real Estate, people pick and choose someone who has traits and skills that sets them apart from others.
